'Dancing on the Edge' Stephen Poliakoff - Focusless
Anyone else watch it last night? It's been quite heavily trailed on the BBC for a few weeks, and I was quite looking forward to it. We both watched last night's 90 mins opener, but although it looked good and seemed very worthy, it was a bit of a let down, didn't grab us at all. Seemed quite stilted at times.

We gave up after an hour and switched over to Dave to watch old 'Not going out's, which IMO were better written and a heck of a lot funnier.

'Dancing on the Edge' Stephen Poliakoff - Meldrew
I quite enjoyed it as I am almost old enough to remember "Those Days"! I did think the sets and locations were amazing and the costumes too!

 House of Cards - Crankcase
May I recommend the American House of Cards, the remake with Kevin Spacey that was launched on the 1st of February? An excellently acted political drama, with a nod or two to the English original. A bit raunchier than The West Wing but some sharp writing.

It's only currently available on Netflix though, so the audience (here anyway) might be limited at present.

Is that the same House of Cards that brought us the phrase 'you might think that I couldn't possibly comment'?

Indeed it is. It was excellent in the original incarnation too (which is also on Netflix, I might add).

It did gain a certain momentum from following on the heels of Mrs T's defenestration but excellent balck drama nonetheless.

Just watched this, having recorded it earlier in the week. Written and presented by John Bly, a local antiques dealer and character, so it caught my eye.

I didn't expect it to be such a personal story. Well worth a watch if you have any interest at all in this sort of thing.

Desert Island Discs (Radio) - Duncan
OK. Not TV, but radio.

I listened to bits of Desert Island Discs today - rather unusual for me.

The subject was a Sikh woman called Jasvinder Sanghera. Her parents were immigrants, she was born here. When she was 14 her mother showed her a photo of a man living in India and said 'this is the man you are going to marry'.

She refused to marry the man and said that she would choose the man she would marry. Eventually she ran away from home. Since then she has formed relationships with men of her own choosing and is married with three? children.

Her parents have disowned her, saying that she has brought shame on the family. She has formed a charity and written a number of books on the subject of womens' place in traditional Asian society.

I didn't hear all of the programme, but I wondered how her parents justified their attitude. Jasvinder has suffered abuse, threats and people smearing excrement on her charity's premises. Has there ever been a serious debate on the subject of forced marriage?

Desert Island Discs (Radio) - Zero
It gets worse than abuse, threats and excrement. Kidnappings and murder, while not common have been known.

Desert Island Discs (Radio) - smokie
Just because it doesn't fit our attitude doesn't mean it is wrong (well, excepting the criminal offences associated with it I suppose). Our own laws and rules would be as offensive/oppressive to others as theirs may be to us. There are two sides to everything.

>>
Fully agree with that.

But...
On the whole, when living in another country, under their laws and customs one HAS to abide to said laws/customs or major issues will occur.

The problem with the UK is, that if immigrants find our laws and rules as offensive/oppressive those laws are ignored. That's where the real problems steam from...

Desert Island Discs (Radio) - Zero
Arranged marriages are a pretty widespread practise globally, and has worked well for generations for many.

However, when cultures clash the younger generation tend to absorb new ways and dump the old. Its when women are forced to marry against their wishes with threats or acts of violence or blackmail that it becomes an abhorrent (and illegal) act.

Desert Island Discs (Radio) - Fullchat
And then there is the barbaric act of Female Genital Mutilation.

Honour Based Violence and Forced Marriages revolve around the perception of shame and dishonour that is brought upon the family if (normally female) does not comply to the male dominated requirements of the culture. The Family and 'Community' spreads worldwide.

What we would see as normal behaviour is dealt with far more severely within the family.

Typical example:

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/6835301/Honour-killing-why-did-police-send-girl-home-to-die-by-her-violent-father.html

The male is seen as a bar of gold, the female a piece of silk. Drop both in a muddy puddle and the gold can be polished clean the silk is forever dirty.

When the family decide to rid themselves of the person it is a family affair with serious violence and rape. Younger members of the family made to watch as a warning.

It is only fairly recently that the authorities have realised the extent and factors around the issues.

>> the barbaric act of Female Genital Mutilation.

In my Africa hacking days I fell out big time with one of my editors (employers!) at the time over this issue. Although his own people in Eastern Nigeria don't practise it, he insisted it was a valid cultural phenomenon. We became so heated that other people, secretaries and fellow hacks, started peering anxiously round the door.

I once asked a Central African girl, a sort of hotel tart, whether she had been 'cut down there'. Of course, she said. Without that she wouldn't be a Muslim - an Arab. She was a Zaghawa from the Chad/Sudan border, tall and black, not a person I would identify as an Arab on sight. And of course female circumcision of any sort is nothing to do with Islam, purely a local social thing.

She was a nice girl, ladylike and with a queenly bearing. You could buy her dinner without fear of embarrassment. They aren't all like that.

Yes its the genuine thing Z, it was really playing up yesterday refusing to let us watch a program, preferring us to series link or watch later or whatever the other alternative was..the program was actually playing already.
SWM swithed it off for its countless umpteenth reboot, that finally sorted it...how it hasn't gone through the conservatory door at 50mph is a mystery.

I'm off to evensong to pray for the Sky sales geezer to phone and offer us half price for 12 months again, at least we'll get an easily useable reliable recorder again.

 Sci-fi - Roger.
Our Humax was a "refurb" direct from Humax.
Initially we had lots of rebooting necessary due to the program guide freezing up, but that seems to have been cured with an update.
The only quibbles I have is that moving between programs on the guide is very slow and that the remote is so sensitive in switching functions, that pressing a button too hard or long tends to reverse the selection just made.
Otherwise it's fine.
The "on demand" stuff is well catered for by the Samsung TV, which supports iPlayer, ITV Player, 4OD & 5OD.
