As the thread says, don't click on this otherwise (depending on browser) you might find it difficult to close it down. Relaunching the browser might bring back the old pages... Safari certainly would.

It did nothing for me, other than sticking an odd message about suffering on the screen. So I just closed it. But I've got blockers and stuff all over the shop in my Firefox.

If, however, it IS going to do something unpleasant (I don't know what) then it seems perhaps a mite irresponsible to post it, or at least to make it clickable. Or maybe it's just annoying.

Feel free to reply along the lines of "get the madam".

It will open pop up boxes which do not have a close button. And you might not be able to close down the browser without killing it. Safari would remember the page that was open when you open it - by default anyway. You can override the default by opening Safari (or many apps on a Mac) by holding down left shift when you open them.

How this runs on say in iPhone in Safari I have no idea.

On the second pop-up Chrome* gave the choice of preventing anymore from that site.

Lighten up dear boy. It's not like it's a virus, trojan, a doomsday machine or anything.

Any recipient who receives the link and opens it just has to click the word "OK" 300 or so times. If nothing else it'll stop them from surfing porn for a while which will make Mr Cameron very happy indeed.

Anyway, I posted a disclaimer not to click on the link. Did you go around touching wet paint when the sign told you not to?

Doesn't break anything, simple to change back and a bit of a laugh. Bonus merriment points if the thing does Arabic, Korean or similar... Also sends an important personal security message about locking your phone when you leave it lying around!

I miss the gag from the old Win 3 days:
1) Screenshot machine's desktop.
2) Save screenshot as a bitmap.
3) Set as wallpaper.
4) Iconise Program Manager.
5) Drag icon to somewhere where it will be overlooked.

Presto. A machine on which apparently absolutely nothing works bar moving the mouse pointer.

See now there's another perspective.

It certainly doesn't break anything, but if you do not know how to change it back, you are stuck with no communication..and that is not so funny, in fact it is intensely irritating.

When someone changed my phone..into Arabic...I was staying at some friends one Christmas and quite fancied calling my family on Christmas Day. A bit difficult when all your phone numbers are in the phone and you cannot work out how to get to them or which number is which. The bloke that did it (a day guest of the people I was staying with) thought it was hilarious. My friends were embarrassed that a friend of theirs had done it..because I was totally stuck.

Same as when a good mate of mine came to my house in London and fiddled with something on the computer so something different happened to the screensaver. I gave him a right mouthful on the phone and told him if he couldn't keep his mitts to himself in my house, he'd not be welcome back...after his initial indignation, he worked out I meant it and hasn't overstepped the mark again. I have enough problems with my computer doing its own changes against my wishes, without some 'richard cranium' doing it on purpose. Some of us just turn the things on, use them and turn them off..and hope to hell nothing changes in the meantime.

Some of you with knowledge of the subject seem to think it's funny, whilst those of us who do not and struggle with some of the technology have an enormous sense of humour loss... can you not work out why?

Would you find it quite so funny if someone fiddled with the ECU on your car and left it in limp home mode?

Perhaps you wouldn't mind answering my question about whether or not you'd find it funny if someone tweeked your car's ECU and left it in limp home mode...someone with the technical skills and/or equipment that knew you didn't... or didn't care whether you did or not.

Same principle.

>> Same principle.

No it's not. It's a poor example.

You need specialised equipment to tweak an ECU. Not everyone has one of those in their trouser pocket.

Whereas clicking on a weblink that someone txt'd you, or going into a phones menu settings to change the language doesn't require much skill at all.

...and there we get to the crux of the matter. It isn't difficult for you..but IS for me and plenty like me.

So I have to suffer, because your thought processes are such that I should have the same skill set as you..and if I don't...tough.

It's easy to laugh at others if you have more knowledge than them, but not an overly pleasant human trait.

So, are you telling us that all your mates and friends are also technophobes? I've always got by with asking other people if I'm unsure of how to solve a problem myself. Are you unable to do the same?

In what way have you suffered? Did you click on the link at the start of the thread, despite the warning not to? Seems to me you're just trying to blame me for something your mate did to your phone. In what way exactly am I responsible for changing the language of your phone to Arabic?

Have you never played a prank on anyone then? It happens all the time in my social life and also my workplace with other friends and colleagues.

Yes, all the time...but...you choose your moments and temper your humour to the circumstance.

You don't seem to understand that someone without your knowledge or skill set is completely lost when this sort of thing happens to them. That is not a very nice position to be in and could have had the joker be more thoughtful.

That makes sense. For example you might to it in a social environment, one that is often a bit lively with ribbing and leg pulling and, since its a computer prank, perhaps an environment that uses computers.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think it was funny or witty, but I do think you're taking it a bit too seriously.

Actually I rarely like any practical joke since for the most part they depend on exploiting someone's trust, or at least lack of suspicion, of oneself - kind of teaching the wrong lesson - but they're not really worth getting a***y over.

Well not to labour the point, but that's the aim of practical joke. Little point doing it to someone who won't fall for it, notice it before hand, IT geek etc.

I wasn't asking you to consider the physical act of tweaking an ECU, but the principle of it.

If you went to a mate's party or stag weekend and one of the lads had the equipment to fiddle with your car's ECU and left it in limp home mode, would you be impressed and find it funny..or.. seriously 'p'd off at how selfish they were, because you are not able to put it right?

No friends of mine would be that irresponsible. Likewise, neither would I be to them.

Your example of messing with a cars ecu and changing the phone language or causing a web browser to have an 'OK' button to press multiple times before it closes again are worlds apart from one another. The former can have serious consequences, the latter are nothing but harmless pranks.

Seeing as you're so knowledgeable on the subject, can you explain to the viewers how by clicking on the link at the start of this thread would stop anyone from making an emergency call on their smart phone, or any other call come to that?

The thread drift of changing the language on a phone (which incidentally was brought up by someone else and not me) shouldn't make any difference either, unless you've only had the phone 5 minutes. Regardless what language the phone is set to, the user should be familiar with how to access their address book to obtain the number they want to dial.

Not quite no, but I'll answer anyway. I'd be annoyed yes, but then it's hardly for my amusement is it? I'd impressed as well if they did my ECU in such a manner TBH. Then I'd return the favour in some other manner. All good fun.

TBH I can't see how you wouldn't find it funny in the slighest, but that's humour for you, entirely subjective.

I don't think its that funny, however I can't see why it could be soo annoying or offensive either.

Surely it is just that, humour which is to your taste or not. And some people found it funny whilst others did not, and it caused no harm to those who did not except for conceivably a little irritation. Shirley not a big deal either way..

I don't know about this defending Dave, this is not a good habit to get into. I'm starting to get all twitchy and nervous.

I'm sure normal service will resume shortly ;)

I used to have a link to another website that asked something along the lines of "do you want to see some buttons?" with a 'yes' and 'no' box on the screen. You could chase the 'no' button around the screen all day if you wanted to but you would stand no chance of catching it because it kept moving. You basically had no choice but to click on 'yes'. And that was when the fun started. The whole screen would fill up with buttons and you couldn't close it until you clicked on every one.

The link I posted above is trivial compared to that one. Now where did I put it?

>> Or maybe it's just annoying.

Correct. A friend sent it to me earlier, and being totally gullible I clicked on it because it came from a trusted source - there was no warning not to click on it, unlike the warning I gave.

Basically on an iPhone (and probably an android one) it asks a series of questions or something like that and to progress on you have to click on an "OK" box after each event. Trouble is there is something like 300 events before you finally get to the end and the web browser will self close. On a PC it's really easy to get to the end because all you need to do is hold down the return key which does the "OK" clicking for you, but on a phone it's not as simple.

I managed to stop it short by opening another web page from one of my apps and then closing down the frankly.pitas.com one. I found out afterwards that if you put the phone into airplane mode in the settings menu, you can also prematurely close down the annoying page.

End of the day, it's harmless but damn annoying for any recipient. From a senders point of view its a laugh. Message ends.

If you have enough technical knowledge, it may well be a sort of laugh. If you haven't, it is irritating and spiteful.

You know of course that plenty of people do not have much technical knowledge and will get wrapped up in this crap for ages. I cannot work out what is supposed to be funny about that.

Oh and putting a disclaimer about not opening it, has no real meaning when you know people will open it..as that is why you posted it.
