Depends on how much you want to avoid tools...

I want some compact but strong casters that won't mark the floor and can be attached to the underside of a big metal cabin trunk that serves as a coffee table sort of thing in here.

AC, how about some like these.

They might not be strong enough for your application but they are compact.
You could bolt them to the trunk or screw them to a sheet of ply, say 3 inches smaller all round than the trunk and just place the trunk on top

Thank you Crocks, those could be right. May well try them.

A piece of wood, perhaps blockboard, perhaps something solid, inside the trunk rather than outside I think.

Come on you two, they're spelt castors, not casters.

Tch, honestly. What will casual visitors to the site think?

As the fishermen here will know casters are the chrysalis of the house fly maggot. Excellent bait for roach and rudd.

Tsk. It's annoying to make spellling mistakes. On this occasion zookeeper led me into it... but it wasn't a mistake after all. The SOD gives both spellings but says the -or version 'may have been favoured as more suitable to an instrument' or words to that effect.

Phew, that was a near one.
