 Eurovision - smokie
I know no-one here will be watching this, and I've only seen three songs and will shortly be watching the boxing. But are they miming or is my telly out of sync? For sure the drummer's beat in the backing band wasn't the one I was hearing, there were snare beats when he was lifting his stick.

In all seriousness, my telly is not out of sync, but the singers are mostly in time but just occasionally they seem to me to miss their lipsync a little, not enough to notice, which is why I am not sure.

Hmmm... before pressing post I decided to look it up. Last year someone wrote

"So why is it that they are singing one moment and then lip syncing the next? Well here’s how it works: the footage starts off as a live broadcast of the performance, then when they show you a very complicated camera shot on TV, it is infact a pre-recorded shot from the dress rehearsal, or from the semi-final. However the audio you hear is still live, so the video and audio does not sync perfectly. So it appears as of they are lip syncing, even though they’re not and it just different footage"

However back in 2010 a BBC item said "One major musical event where lip-synching is banned is the Eurovision Song Contest, where all vocals performed on stage have to be live"

So, answered my own question but someone else may be interested...

I've been watching it. I always do. Seen all 26 songs. I know that's deeply unfashionable and the show should only be watched if at all in an ironic manner but I quite like it. There- I've said it.

My top 3 are UK, Greece and Spain.

Looking forward to the voting.

Since the advent of digital telly and no doubt digital everything else in the production process I've given up trying to worry about picture/sound being out of sync - it's the new normal! v

+1

I used to re-sync stuff I'd recorded off the telly for SWMBO before burning it to DVD, but I don't bother any more and there's not been negative customer feedback.

Watched some of the contest as the York v Fleetwood match was off due to a waterlogged pitch.

To me, the real winners were the set designers who did a brilliant job...

I saw the first half dozen or so acts while we were eating supper. I was preparing for my annual recharge of Euroracism, but, to my surprise, the songs were nearly OK. I suppose I was slightly disappointed when most of them seemed to be singing in English.

I turned over to ITV4 at 9 o'clock for the 4th stage of the Women's Tour. I presume you'll all be coming over to wonderful Bury St Edmunds tomorrow to join us for the 5th and final stage!

To get Eurovision spectacularly out of sync, do what we did. TV picture with the sound through the Hi-Fi from the Radio 2 broadcast. It was so far out it was funny.

And what's with the tart sporting a beard?
 Eurovision - Haywain
"And what's with the tart sporting a beard?"

If that's not a reason to get out of Europe, I don't know what is!
 Eurovision - CGNorwich
In the lead at the moment

Love to but will be in the pleasant town of Framlingham tomorrow.
 Eurovision - Haywain
"the pleasant town of Framlingham"

Pleasant …………………. but not wonderful! ;-)
 Eurovision - bathtub tom
Do they still do Riverdance as the interval entertainment?
 Eurovision - Haywain
The bearded tart wins it!

That's it - I'm outa there.

Roger, Roger, where do I put my cross???
 Eurovision - CGNorwich
Fantastic voice, and a great song. A deserving winner.

She only won by a whisker though.

Plagiarised from elsewhere:

At last, someone has got my Joan Collins joke. I was beginning to feel like a lone voice crying in the wilderness.

That beard does suit her though.

I have to admit, I'd had a few glasses of wine and was struggling to see the Adam's apple.
I was starting to convince myself it was a stuck on beard.

"Fantastic voice, and a great song. A deserving winner."

And, let's face it while we're being generous, a beautifully trimmed beard.

I thought our Molly deserved better than 17th (out of 26) - sounded to me like a good Eurovision song as well as being a quite a good song. She wrote it herself, and seemed quite keen to do well for her country in interviews.

Still, I suppose 17th is better than some of our recent efforts...

Yes, the (lack of) sound sync was a bit off-putting. Made it look like they were all miming, which AFAIK isn't the case (they singers are live but the bands aren't).

True, but it does make for much more rapid progress between the songs and less "filling in" time as the conductors and music scores don't have to be changed over.

All I can say about the contest is that "she" wasn't the Wurst singer in Europe on the night....
 Eurovision - Armel Coussine
Good to see that Joan Collins won. Her career has been flagging lately.
 Eurovision - Focusless
>> True, but

Indeed - I wasn't complaining.

I only caught a few of the songs last night - will try to see a few more on iPlayer - but of those, Netherlands were my favourite. They went for a relatively subdued country/Lady Antebellum-ish feel, unusual (unique?) for Eurovision, ending up 2nd:

Surprised it did as well as it did without a big anthemic chorus. Wouldn't be surprised to see that doing well in the US country charts.

I thought the Austrian chick was hot! Great figure, lovely hair and then the gantry mounted camera swung round and begger me, it's a bloke!

Shock of me life. Had to have a beer after that. Might sue someone for sych...spchyco...mental damage.
 Eurovision - Haywain
"begger me, it's a bloke!"

Are you sure? How do you know?

I hope this isn't the start of a new trend - I really don't want my wife to grow one.
 Eurovision - Bromptonaut
Didn't watch last night and haven't for years. My favourite from when I did is this one:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iRBfuV8Y1k

A mixed group of Celts (Welsh, Scots and Breton) performing in the Breton language.

The Celtic nations have their own more subtle brand of Eurovision.

There's something wrong with that website. All the words are jumbled up.

The worst thing about it is that I can't see any dates for this festival. Fundamental information, surely?

I love Eurovision and watch keenly every year. Yes, UK should have finished higher this year but my favourites were Malta, Spain and Finland. Montenegro was good too.

My nippers loved the cheesecake song from Belarus. We watched it with them on Sunday morning, the missus hit fast forward when Poland came on..........

Great fun.
 Eurovision - CGNorwich
The Portugese milking song was my favourite. Soft porn really.
 Eurovision - Alanovich
That was Poland, CGN. Evidently your eyes were on something other than their flag at the time.
 Eurovision - CGNorwich
Yep, I got distracted somehow.
 Eurovision - Alastairw
The Polish ladies that work in my office are both mortified. I voted for it in the semi final, but voted for Holland in the final. UK song deserved more points, but at least we beat France!
 Eurovision - swiss tony
>> The Polish ladies that work in my office are both mortified

I'm not surprised.
Not only was that soft porn, but some of the girls look underage.
 Eurovision - Crankcase
Started to watch the link, but after about thirty seconds when it was still that type of chanty rap talky thing I hate so much I abandoned it. Not my kind of music at all.
