What to use to clean an oven - smokie
Have we done this before?

SWMBO asked me if I had time to clean the oven before Christmas. Couldn't really say no...

So I got out some substance we'd bought ages ago and smeared it all over the oven last night. It said you could put it on overnight but it had pretty much dried up by this morning and really didn't seem to do much, although she's quite happy with the outcome.

So what do people here find the best stuff for cleaning an oven is? I can't imagine those companies that come to your house simply use hot water and elbow grease... (but I do think one thing would be for me to do it more regularly)

A man with a van is best............get your oven over here and I'll phone 'Ovenu' for you :-)

Failing that...a good woman does the job admirably.

Spray on stuff, smells caustic, burns the hands. It foams up, leave it for 10 minutes, then wash off. It will shift anything.

Our 1935 cooker has removable oven panels that just unhook. I spray them outside, then hose down and reassemble.

Including the finish if you leave it on too long. Says the voice of experience. :-(

Local price guide seems to be £50 for a standard oven. Strikes me as quite a lot for something I should be able to do myself.

One ad I read talks about steam cleaning, is that the way to go, with that thick brown greasy stuff? I have a steam device primarily for wallpaper stripping but it has other attachments including a nozzle.

Got a suggested brand Cliff?

That's like the arab sheikh who (allegedly) threw his new car away when it stopped because he didn't know you could refill it with petrol.

Oven Pride or get a specialist in. I think that Environmental Health might have some thing to say about ours at the moment but it can wait till after Christmas now !

I did once have one that was supposed to be "self-cleaning", presumably aimed at the bachelor market.
I think it just meant it was a sort of dark chocolatey brown so you didn't notice the dirt.

Oven Pride. It's what at least some of the visiting oven fettlers use.

Just turn it up high then, open all the windows and doors and it'll all burn off then;)

This 'good woman' doesn't clean ovens!

Cannot recommend Ovenu enough. Thought our oven was beyond recovery (previous owners had never cleaned it), and it looked like new after he finished with it. Even the fan started working again.

That large soaking tray looked handy.

I recall watching one of those oven cleaning guys. He attacked the inside with wire wool which I thought a bit harsh. With the grills he disappeard outside for a few minuutes and came back with them clean and sparkly. He wouldn't tell me what he used but I had a feeling it was caustic soda or something similar.

Think I've used OvenMate, the packaging looks familiar. I was just reading the manual, I now know how to get the entire door off which will make life a bit easier.

be careful with some of the harsher stuff, if sprayed on the elements at some stage in the not too distant future they suddenly go into thermal meltdown.

Ask me how I know......
