Colleague has bought an iPhone 5 from sister who now has iPhone 6.
Colleague is on O2 sim only whereas sister was on Vodafone contract. Sister has new phone so has taken her SIM to new phone.

1. Can the iPhone be unlocked or is it now permanently locked to Vodafone?
2. If it can be unlocked how would this be done? Possibly mean sister contacting Vodafone or would that now result in the new phone being unlocked as SIM has been moved?

Sisters live 50 miles apart so not easy to jump SIMS between phones!

Yes the phone can be unlocked, only vodphone can do it so she will need to contact them and from memory when mine was unlocked, her vodphone sim needs to be in it when its unlocked.

She should have done all that before she handed it on.

I learnt quite recently that all 02 iPhones on a contract are unlocked from day 1, maybe Vodafone's are the same.

mine wasn't, neither was wife's. It must be a recent change.

That's what they told me and I migrated to 3 Network with no problem. I could have sworn I read it on the website as well.

Just as an update she went into a Vodafone shop today, paid £19.99 to get it unlocked, within 7-10 days she will receive an email with some sort of code to unblock the phone via iTunes.
