Songs that come insistently to mind - Armel Coussine
I often find this happening to me, a song running through my head that won't go away.

Today's is the Kinks with that superb number Apeman... what I remembered was the aggressive theme verse:

'I'm an apeman, I'm an ape ape man, I'm an apeman;
I'm a King Kong man, I'm a voodoo man, I'm an apeman', and so on.

I couldn't remember the rest of the lyric (surprisingly intellectual, pacifist, eco and well-meaning, it turned out) so Googled the number. Didn't look or sound quite as I remembered it, but near enough. I don't remember Ray Davis looking so young back in the day, but he must have done.

I suppose we all did because it was a while back.

"Apeman"

i think i'm sophisticated
'cause i'm livin' my life like a good homosapien
but all around everybody's multiplyin'
and they're walkin' 'round like flies now
so i'm no better than the animals sitting in the cages in the zoo, man
'cause compared to the flowers and the birds and the trees,
i am an apeman

i think i'm so educated and i'm so civilised 'cause i'm a strict vegetarian
but with the overpopulation and inflation and starvation and the crazy politicians
i don't feel safe in this world no more
i don't want to die in a nuclear war
i want to sail away to a distant shore and make like an apeman

i'm an apeman
i'm an ape apeman
oh, i'm an apeman
i'm a king kong man, i'm a voodoo man
oh, i'm an apeman
'cause compared to the sun, the city, the sky,
compared to the clouds as they roll by,
compared to the bugs, and the spiders and flies
i am an apeman

la la la la la la la la la la

a man's evolution has created the city and the motor traffic rumble
but give me half a chance
and i'll be takin' off my clothes and livin' in the jungle
'cause the only time that i feel at ease
is swingin' up and down in the coconut tree
oh, what a life of luxury, to be like an apeman

i'm an apeman
i'm an ape apeman
oh, i'm an apeman
i'm a king kong man, i'm a voodoo man
oh, i'm an apeman

i look out my window but i can't see the sky
the air pollution is foggin' up my eyes
i wanna get out of this city alive
and make like an apeman

la la la la la la la la la la

come on and love me, be my apeman girl
and we'd be so happy in my apeman world

i'm an apeman
i'm an ape apeman
oh, i'm an apeman
i'm a king kong man, i'm a voodoo man
oh, i'm an apeman

i'll be tarzan, you be my jane
i'll keep you warm and you keep me sane
we'll sit in the trees and eat bananas all day
just like an apeman

i'm an apeman
i'm an ape apeman
oh, i'm an apeman
i'm a king kong man, i'm a voodoo man
oh, i'm an apeman

i don't feel safe in this world no more
i don't want to die in a nuclear war
i wanna sail away to a distant shore
and make like an apeman

la la la la la la la la la la

Thanks FMR.

Do you like the song too?

The modern phrase AC is "earworm"....can be alleviated by chewing something according to a R4 programme.

The Kinks were a bit tame. You can't beat some real hardcore Rock & Roll -

Why do that? I usually like earworm unless it's something nasty. Anyway it always stops eventually.

Listen to this, Disney's "It's a Small World (after all)", at your peril.

goo.gl/l7vrBC

Years after I first heard it on a visit to Disneyworld with small children, I read somewhere it is the most notorious earworm. It certainly stuck with me for literally years with no reinforcement whatsoever.

It probably didn't help that the ride gives you about 15 minutes of it x the number of goes the children can persuade you to have.

That's terrible Manatee. Typical twittering empty meaningless 'feelgood' Disney crap, almost unbearable. Good choral effects of course, no expense spared. But essentially dull and unmemorable. (Sorry if you like it, but I suppose you're just teasing really).

The Kinks by contrast, like other rock groups in their day, had a bit of edge even if they did look about twelve years old.

Indeed it is awful AC, that's the nature of most of them I think - simple, repetitive, hard to shift. You're lucky if you get one you like and can sing along with to yourself.

Now here's a real singer, and a video that's been watched over 500 million times:

Is it ok that a cartoon character makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up? :)

Good voice all right, but wasted on another bland, crap Disney song.

Despite the animation, best in the business, Disney's all-American petty-bourgeois sweetness is nauseating to a person of culture. Even when the person is watching with great enjoyment.

Why is it that no one here seems to understand ambivalence? We all live with it whether we like it or not.

Trouble is Sire, you just don't like Disney. Danny and I were always hopping the wag and bunking in the picture house in Waterloo station to watch all the Disney films. I still luv 'em all today!
Songs that come insistently to mind - Dog
This short film shows the cinema within Waterloo station. The film may well be of interest to our resident trainspotter.

>> the cinema within Waterloo station.

All the London main line stations used to have a news cinema for people waiting for trains. There was one in Piccadilly Circus, or near it, and one or two others I seem to remember.

I went to them to kill time back in the day. The associated British Pathé news was dire, 'Look at Life' - tiresome British fifties stuff, 'Whoops Grandma!' and so on - even worse. The only good stuff was the Disney cartoons.

Video killed the cinema star innit?

Should give you a quick reminder and allow you to hate me all this week!

I remember it only too well.

The odd thing about that number is that one thinks instinctively that the nun herself is Dominique, Soeur or Mère Dominique as it were, but if you listen to the very tiresome lyric you realise that Dominique is really an unusually po-faced bloke.

It's actually quite a sad story.

Actually Sp I failed to take in the fact that the po-faced bloke was St Dominic, founder of the Dominican order.

I suppose if nothing else it shows what an unbeliever I have become.

I always enjoyed the ole Pathe newsreels, still do thanks to YouTube.

I haven't been near nor by a cinema for over 20 years, although 'back then' I'd think nothing of driving from Hastings to Leicester Sq. to watch a decent film on a proper [big] screen.
