What is your best Christmas present? - Westpig
I'm guessing my mate's is this year's car that his wife bought him.. with my help.

A couple of weeks back, my mate's wife rang me and said could I give her some advice as she wanted to buy her hubby a Porsche Boxster for Christmas.. as he'd had one before, sold it and regretted it.

All she knew was it had to be a 2.7 or 3.2 (the 3.2 is an 'S') because he'd originally had a 2.5 and had wanted more poke... oh and it had to be dark blue.

I agreed to help and come with her to look at stuff etc.

She sent me some links to adverts that she'd narrowed down... and one car shone out. An '03' Boxster 'S'; Tiptronic; dark blue with black leather; 66,000 miles.

It was being sold by a Porsche specialist, they'd sold it twice before over a period of 7 years and they'd just serviced it.... it also had a good history (first 4 years Porsche, next 3 years that Porsche specialist, next 4 years local garage, but with a Porsche main dealer visit in the middle for £3.5k worth of nothing to worry too much about work and finally that Porsche specialist again)....and was described as immaculate.

I armed myself with a load of info from several Porsche forums on what to look for and what can go wrong... and when we got there they handed me over to the mechanic who'd serviced it and done the brake discs and he very thoroughly talked over all the issues I had on my check list, explaining in great detail what the pitfalls were, how you got round them, etc

e.g. dampness under the passenger carpet = leak (obviously)..... which can affect the ECU which is situated near there. Apparently a leak will be down to either:

1, blocked roof drainage holes, sometimes neglected... he partially opened the hood and showed me where they were and how clean they were

2, plastic membrane on doors (under the door trim) prevents water leaks from water running down the windows. If someone breaks it, e.g. to replace a window regulator or similar, that garage takes off the old and puts on new.. otherwise he reckoned it would leak.

There were other issues covered by him as well.

The car was indeed immaculate, very well looked after and the garage is relatively local. Combined with a warranty thrown in, an optimiser for the battery, delivery to my place and a sensible little drop in price...

...the deal was done.

Lucky git.

For the hand over, we'd Christmas wrapped the keys in a small box, put that box in a large box... and got him to come to my place to 'help me carry a heavy box up to the house with my kid's present in'. The car was parked in the shed with a cover over it. When I picked up the exceptionally light large box, handed it to him and then walked off whilst his missus did her bit, his face was a picture.

Did I say 'lucky git'?

Well Merry Christmas everyone ! Just come downstairs to put the kettle on and I am planning next to take the dog for a long walk before the chaos begins.

Having glanced under the tree, I regret to say none of the packages appears to be especially Porsche shaped.

Oh well, maybe next year eh?

;-)

Any juicer recommendations before I order my Vitamix recon? My CA friends have a Vitamix which gets lots of use...I love the morning green veg smoothies, mixed with ice cubes. They have provided me with their own recipes.

This is what the missus uses to make smoothies and it appears to get good reviews:

Merry Christmas !
Day before yesterday I bought myself a new Philips shaver from Argos as the old one was getting a bit blunt and I never bother buying new cutters. Decided last night to break the seal on the box (so it can't be returned :-( ) and put it on charge ready for this morning. Guess what I received for Christmas !!! Because of who it was from it will be awkward to ask about it being returned so the plan is to put it away for a couple of years until needed.Would it be better battery wise to leave it in the box as it is or should I fully charge it and then charge it periodically ? Cheers.

Been acting as Sancho Panza to SWM's Donkey Hotey...doing the washing up as she performs with her knives and things. Saving the now empty dishwasher 'til later.

Dog walked. Very very wet here in Ribblesdale. Poor sods in Lake District. Off to pub to meet my chums until 3:15 then Cumberland sausage sandwich with HP Fruity sauce. Stove is lit already, and an early evening watching 'Early Doors' boxed set.

An Arduino, so I get back into being an electronics hobbyist. I got the full get that comes with a breadboard, a nice book, LEDs, optocoupler, transistors, shift register, motors, breadboard, and sensors.

I asked for it so it wasn't a surprise, but it will keep me busy all week :). I started out as a hobbyist when I was 14-16 but then I got into programming and the electronics took a back seat. Now I combine both.

I got one of them for Christmas years ago, I don't use it very often but it is a very handy tool. Mine is a B&D branded one though. Now I am becoming a 'maker' I think I will use it quite often.

I don't think I've ever owned anything with a more comprehensively useless instruction manual in my life. Thank God for YouTube.

Three bottles of ' craft ' beer and a half share, with SWM, of a voucher for afternoon tea at the Grosvenor, Chester any time we like. Done it before, went over on the train and had a nice day out with excellent scran. Will wait a month or so though.

Good meal, 12 round the table. I'd finished off a full bottle of Tempranillo by then so it all went over me. Excellent cooking by Swm...will nominate her for Nobel Food Prize.

Nice turkey and salt sandwich on Warburtons white with 2 mince pies atm. Loads of grub left and City playing tomorrow so what could be better...slob out day for both of us !
