Sahara sand again in Surrey - henry k
I need to wash the sand off or do a wait a couple of days for Frank? :--)
This is ridiculous situation in December.
- an example of the variations across the country.
I do have every sympathy for all those folks washed out of their homes.

Think I'd wait for the rain to remove the worst of it Henry. Wouldn't fancy running a wet sponge impregnated with fine sand over the paintwork, no matter how carefully.

Surely in Surrey one pays someone else to wash the sand off?

We pay extra for Saharan sand. The poor have to make do with Morecombe.

Why can southerners not correctly (a) spell Morecambe or (b) pronounce Harrogate?

You know when you visit somewhere and you think, if required, I could live here? Well I think that about Harrogate.

It is however, compromised by not being by the sea, or being Edinburgh.

No, this is much less interesting than Harrogate.

Harrogate is not all it's cracked up to be. Despite what the media would have you believe.

Much to to my chagrin, my son, now in his final year at school, has lived here in darkest Cheshire since he was 2. Resultantly he occasionally has the local tortured vowel, missing R and absent H issues. I feel I have failed him in that respect...

He calls it Aowgate?
Sahara sand again in Surrey - Runfer D'Hills
He's never been there. But in a moment of weakness I suspect he'd be looking for somewhere like Arragit on the map. ( strangely Rs don't go astray when followed by vowels only when preceded by them ) It's quite complicated really.

E.G. - a 'car' becomes a 'cah' but a 'rat' remains a 'rat'. Hard isn't it?

Not for a cockney, its our native tongue. Think you'll find the "t" in RAT gets thrown down the back of the throat and muffled with no "ti" sound at the end, its called a glottal stop, the fundamental new phonetic in estuary english.
