In his way as important as Richard Hadlee in New Zealand's evolution from the mild-mannered janitor of world cricket to punching above their weight against bigger opponents. I saw him bat - and bowl - at Lord's in 1983, when he was 21 and already showing signs that he would eclipse his elder brother Jeff.
Coincidentally, that match marked the debut for England of Chris Smith - who would also be eclipsed by his younger brother.
