 Dearly Beloved - zippy
Just on the wires, it seems that the singer Prince has died at 57.

It is a very sad year!

RIP

Had a few good songs.
But compared to Lemmy, Glen Frey, Bowie, Merle Haggard...

Not that upset. But will listen to 1999 later.

Loads of hits and many for other signers or groups where he thought it would suit them better (like Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 You".

Despite the big "star" act, he was apparently a very nice person,.

Lot's of celebs appear to have died this year, but that will increasingly be the case. Before the mid fifties the only celebrity's were film stars, then television and pop music exploded onto the scene and scores of new ones were created almost overnight. All being around the same age when they started, they are now growing old together and will obviously popping their clogs at about the same time.

That seemed to be true about David Bowie too. That's what I picked up, after his death, from reading comments from people who had met him.

I liked Prince's music. I enjoyed reading what Sinead O'Connor said to him when they met. It's in the penultimate paragraph of the "Personal life" section of his Wikipedia page.

Prince being 57 doesn't seem right somehow. Ditto others from the 80s who I grew up with eg. Billy Idol, who's still performing at 60.

I quite like 'when doves cry' and 'kiss', really like 'take me with you', but not much else. Obviously a talented guy though.

A shame like Victoria Wood and now Prince.

The only thing I had in Common with Prince is the same Birth day 7th of June.
 Dearly Beloved - VxFan
Everyone seems to be dropping like flies this year.

David Bowie, Paul Daniels, Ronnie Corbett, David Gest, Alan Rickman, Terry Wogan, Denise Robertson, Victoria Wood, Tony Warren, Frank Kelly, George Martin, Glenn Frey, Maurice White, Garry Shandling,

Have I missed anyone else?

Only a few hundred people who lived a good but unobtrusive life.
 Dearly Beloved - rtj70
Apparently over 150,000 people die each day. So today is day 111 of 2016, so we've missed off maybe close to 17 million.

But I got someone saying 62 was a good age I think. But Ronnie Corbett and Paul Daniels got a fair few more years.

Well since around 55 million people die every year you might have missed a few.
 Dearly Beloved - VxFan
Yes, but I'm not including Joe Public, just people who are quite well known.
 Dearly Beloved - rtj70
>> just people who are quite well known.

Well does that include people I know well but you don't?
 Dearly Beloved - VxFan

who knows.

I would only have recognised about half of those on your list. Fame is very subjective.
 Dearly Beloved - sooty123
About the same for me, I recognised seven from Vx's list. The rest I'd have to search to know who they were or what they were supposed to be famous for.
 Dearly Beloved - Roger.
As a defiant fuddy duddy I can happily say that I have never heard Prince perform.
 Dearly Beloved - sooty123
You mean you've heard one of his songs or you've never seen him live?

Radio 2's Desmond Carrington is ninety next month, as is my Mother. 1926 must have been a good year!!

A striking good year!!

I actually quite liked his last one (or the one he did on Strictly before Christmas anyway, where he ends on a high note); more like a proper rock & roll song than a lot of his recent stuff.

I'm not surprised ... with a wife like that. Phwoaar!!
 Dearly Beloved - TheManWithNoName
And she is damned tall. I regularly see them at various swimming events. Their son swims for Harlow swimming club.
A few weeks back my wife was stood right next to him and kept thinking how much this bloke looked like Rod Stewart.
At a recent event held at the Olympic pool she was being asked for autographs and selfies more than he was!

Hey RR, I have corrected your post.....

One of the few oldies still making records.

Here's the Rod performance I alluded to above, live (well, singing live; not 100% sure whether the band are playing):

Nice little ditty IMHO.

It turns out that Prince's last guitar was made in East Sussex:

Some weird-looking axe there brother John: Probably cost a pfennig or two too to purchase.
 Dearly Beloved - John Boy
Yes, indeed, but I love the idea that something like that is being made in what looks like someone's back garden.

I couldn't put a name to the pickups used on that guitar, they are actually single coil pickups, similar- sounding to those used on the standard Strat/Tele I'll wager.

Neck is Rosewood no doubt, same as on my '62 reissue Strat.

Thanks for that link. I was fascinated to read about how and why he uses carbon fibre.
 Dearly Beloved - Armel Coussine
Prince was a 'me too' musician. There were several about at that time.

He's OK, but there's nothing original or beautiful about the music, as I see and hear it. Apart from the name Prince there's nothing much to recommend the guy.

I don't mean to put him down really. Takes courage to confront an audience.

I often exchange music videos with my Canadian friend (who lives in Malaga) She recently sent me these two vids by Prince, but tbh, if someone offered me 1m Canadian dollars to name one song by Prince, I'd have to remain boracic. Yes, I know he did Purple Rain now, but I didn't before he croaked.

Here's the two songs, not my cup of lapsang souchong at all, but I could live with the first one, maybe:
