85 yr old Defrosting Freezer destroys 6 flats! - Falkirk Bairn
85 yr old decided to defrost the freezer and used a Paint Stripper Heat Gun.
6 flats worth £1/4million each might be demolished.

Gun =400+ degrees PLUS gas & plastic of freezer = flats on fire.

Beats Bobby's neighbour who used a blow torch & only destroyed 2 homes.

They are described as 'luxury apartments'? Maybe in Scotland they are, but nowhere else!

Remains were demolished and new school built following year.

That part of Glasgow is rather green and lush - there's a tennis club right across the road from the block of flats that were toasted.

The report also said many of the residents were retired doctors, I knew they had to go somewhere :-)

Does anyone think the guy's age has anything to do with the fire? It's his intellect that was mainly at fault... perhaps he was a bit slow to take extinguishing measures, just conceivably an 'age thing'.

There are instances, I'm not sure how well-attested, of people allegedly bursting into flames and burning to death while just walking about. Such cases (if there are any in reality) are very interesting scientifically. Common sense suggests that they had put a lighted pipe in their pockets while soaked with brandy or whisky or some other inflammable liquid.

Ah, the so-called "Spontaneous Human Combustion".

Every grisly scene you see shows an unburned foot of an old/frail geezer/gal right next to a fireplace.

Likely event is old chap collapses and probably dies, lands on the fire and their body fat melts and (using their clothes as a wick) burns like a candle until all of their fatty bits have burned away to nothing - the unburned foot hardly has any fat and thus doesn't burn.

Invariably these scenes are found afterwards - no-one sees the point of ignition.

How many 'characteristics' do you share, AC? ;-)

4. The hands and feet usually fall off.

Nice.

I do drink habitually but I doubt that I am clinically speaking a 'chronic alcoholic'. I might sleep a bit better if I didn't drink so much.

I am verging on elderly but am not a female.

None of my hands or feet have fallen off yet.

So, more or less none really.

You must forgive me, but I feel it is time for an early evening small one. Cheers!

People who don't have their boiler serviced or do it yourself and boom.

85 year decided to stick two fingers up to his neighbours. It is funny when you read it.Is the old chap still alive?

"Residents of Bishop's Gate were given teas and coffees at the nearby Thorntonhall Tennis Club following the evacuation."

Thank God for the Tennis Club...no mention of any injuries.

A few thoughts:

Is refrigerant inflammable?

Some defrost their fridges with a hair dryer. I suppose it is possible to have a leak, in rare circumstances, due to using it --- metal expansion. But the aiir stream is not usually hot enough to light gas.

The switch inside the handle could have a spark but that is well out of the way of the air flow.
Unless something goes wrong like with one I had that shot a flame out of the side of the switch.

Also there is an over-heat breaker in the air stream in case the air intake gets covered.

Is the gas flammable?

Possibly or even probably:

"Possibly or even probably"

That is why I asked !!!!
The answer I am after is either yes or no.

The link suggests that replacement for older refrigerants with ozone/greenhouse issues MAY be flammable hydrocarbons.

If you want a definitive answer do your own research!!!

For some unknown reason I failed to use your hot link.
It was more helpful than my jumped-to conclusion.

On my reading of it, the answer is YES.

Reminds me of my wayward youth when some of us filled metal containers, that had a hole in the bottom and the top, with coal gas. The gas burned like a candle until the air-gas mix inside, became rich enough to produce a hotter flame that travelled through the hole to the inside. Then there was an almighty whoosh leaving a distorted metal canister. Not the sort of thing one should be doing. But is a mini demo of what would happen with a kitchen full of a rich gas-air mix.
