Didn't they vote to leave the UK the other year, or something?

Without meaning to take what is clearly a joke on your part too seriously, "they" voted by a majority to remain in the UK but the mud from the independence campaign still sticks.

The same sort of contamination is now, and will continue to affect the UK in Europe with reference to Brexit even though there is little to no chance of a leave majority.

Thank goodness it too will all be over before the month is out and we can start rebuilding those damaged relationships.

If you mean is it shown, yes - seen it a few times recently (ITV London).

I saw a 'bet on England to lose' (at kickyball, presumably) advert for one of the indistinguishable betting companies that fill the gaps in Sky's cricket coverage. Is that the one?

It frightens me that so many football clubs have either betting sites or 'payday loans' as their sponsors these days.
Says a lot for the UK economy. Or am I just naive?

Says a lot for the calibre of the audience that they are aiming at.

I'd rather imagine being a lender of small and short term loans has been revolutionised by the computer. In the olden days, such things needed many more staff per amount lent and repayments were difficult to automate.

This one rather shocked me:

Representative example:Borrow £250 for 3 months. Total repayment: £379.44 in 3 monthly payments of £126.48.

Interest p.a: 292.25% (fixed). Representative 1255.66%APR.

Not going to give them publicity by publishing a link

They should be banned completely and NO, I do not know of an alternative, although what happened 'before'.

I know so little about soccer that I thought every European country was in this Euro competition and that it was a straight knock out competition like the FA cup.
Hard to believe that I am so out of touch compared to my early days watching Bradford Park Avenue

We did not have a "I must have it now!" generation encouraged by the marketing industry

...but only because there was no facility to get easy money, especially for poorer people.

People with mortgages usually traded up once in a while and took out some extra mortgage to fund new cars, holidays and things.

But you're right, expectation overall is much higher these days, a couple of foreign holidays a year in fairly exotic locations is the norm for some whereas I was in my late 20s before I could afford my first cheap package deal to Spain, what with crippling mortgage payments and high inflation. Despite both being in what were then well paid jobs, we had many months where we virtually ran out of money to buy food by the last week of the month, and the bank of mum and dad didn't exist because they too were not well off.

Quite so smokie, it is what it is. I got my first house, in Bradford, aged 21. Lied about my wage in order to get the mortgage from the BS, and already had a lodger lined up, without whom I wouldn't be able to meet repayments. All the furniture was second hand apart from the mattress, even the few pots, pans & crockery!
I did go on foreign holidays every year, either Benidorm, Lloret or camping in the Alps somewhere. Plus a two week ski holiday every year...sleeper coach to France and SC apartments with 50 of us in a ski club. I remember paying £120 for two weeks SC in Val d'isere, lift pass & transport.
Rocketing house prices in many parts of the UK, there are exceptions, have prevented many young single people getting on the housing ladder, and I personally know couples in their late thirties, two jobs, no children, still renting. And I also know 'children' still at home in their mid thirties....all their money goes on new car repayments and exotic holidays. Seychelles for Xmas, three weeks in the USA for summer hols and both cars, MB & BMW, less than three years old.
Who knows, maybe if I were their age, I'd have the same mindset.
