Take this simple test:

www.politicalcompass.org/test
Political compass - Are you Left or Right Wing? - Mapmaker
Is that test left over from the 1980s? What a silly question.

"Controlling inflation is more important than controlling unemployment."
Political compass - Are you Left or Right Wing? - commerdriver
6 pages of (not very good) questions - you are joking
Cannot be judged simply and certainly not by these, having looked at the first page

As a personal estimate I am probably right of centre but not by much
I believe in the free market
I believe in work being rewarded and idleness penalised
I believe in home ownership

But
I believe we should take care of the weak, the sick and the elderly
I believe in a good education and good childcare for all
I believe in reasonable working conditions for all

So there

Interesting test. Places me firmly in the libertarian left quadrant.

I was surprised that I am on the left of centre, though almost exactly half way between libertarian and authoritarian.

EDIT: This was me

Economic Left/Right: -3.13
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 0.31

I've seen this before, and got the same result, bang in the middle of libertarian left. I don't think the questions are silly at all.

Agree with all commerdriver.

I've voted Conservative in every election I've been eligible for, bar one; but I'm by no means a Thatcherite. It's partly because previous experience is that Labour promise much and inevitably deliver little.

Go on, give it a try - just to see if this test confirms "As a personal estimate I am probably right of centre but not by much". At one second a question, it won't take up much of your time.

Some of the questions made me think and it is not always that clear. For example I believe people with disabilities need state help financially but very often it could be charity services that make the difference to their lives.

As could be predicted I'm well into left libertarian territory:

My friends and colleagues think of me as extreme right wing nutter.

The test results put me just left of centre.

Society is now either so left wing that centrists are perceived to be extreme right wing, or that people are afraid to show their true right leanings in public - as explained by Jonathan Pie here:

Suprised myself! - I know alot of my views on life differ considerably from alot of folk on here and elsewhere, but I ended up bang on the centre line 3 squares to the left. - pretty well balanced I'd say! ;-)
Political compass - Are you Left or Right Wing? - Cliff Pope
Slightly left on both scores.

But I found I wanted to argue with many of the questions, and ask them exactly what they meant.
Lot's of the questions ask something as if wanting a factual answer, but seemed in reality to be implying that in agreeing with the facts one was agreeing that the facts were desirable.
That an authoritarian state has an advantage over a democracy in getting things done quickly is obviously true, but it doesn't mean I agree with it.

So I found all the time that I wasn't actually answering the question, but wondering what was implied behind it, and what interpretation big brother was going to put on my answer.
Basically I suspect all questionaires are compiled by people of limited intelligence and no intellectual imagination.

You say that that is obviously true, i.e. you agree with the statement.

At the top of the test it says "If you have been directed here directly from another site, we ask that you read our homepage before continuing". You may find it helpful to look at their FAQs
www.politicalcompass.org/faq

One thing missing from the website is any reference to "about us". Some people have tried to find out:
"The politicalcompass.org website does not reveal the people behind it, beyond the fact that it seems to be based in the UK;at the bottom of any page on the website, it is stated that the Political Compass's copyright belongs to an organisation named "Pace News Limited." According to The New York Times, the site is the work of Wayne Brittenden, a political journalist. According to Tom Utley, writing in The Daily Telegraph, the site is connected to One World Action, a charity founded by Glenys Kinnock. An early version of the site was published on One World Action's web server.
The website does not explain its scoring system in detail and some writers have criticised its validity."

Possibly but i suspect they realise the questionnaires are just a bit of fun. So set its set up to make it quick and easy to come up with an answer.

Really, these are questions from a different era. It must be an ancient survey.

"Mothers may have careers, but their first duty is to be homemakers."

Anyway it gave me +4.25 on the left/right scale, and -.46 libertarian.

Interesting you're the only person, so far, that's got a plus score on the left/right scale.

And only person has scored a plus on authoritarian scale.

It has a recent update

"A lot of the questions in the test are very irritatingly phrased and impossible to answer properly, with only these four options available: "strongly agree", "agree", "disagree" and "strongly disagree".

But it is worth playing along with Mrs Kinnock's quiz, if only to bring home to us what a complicated business politics is, and how silly it is to try to condense anybody's political views into a description of two or three words."

Bottom left corner / leftie libertarian. Funnily enough my blob and that of the Green Party overlap, which I'm not particularly upset about given that I voted Green in 2015.

Some of the questions could be clearer. I don't think you should be able to get better healthcare if you can pay for it, but I certainly have no problem with getting the same healthcare faster with private health insurance.

I get to "know" the state of care of NHS hospitals on a regular basis in a large region of SE England. On some days during some busy periods you could say you literally don't get any care! It is a shocking situation which everyone - from the cleaners to the CEOs - is aware of but they all know there are no extra funds available to pay for the staff and facilities needed.

My scores seem more extreme than many others. I am placed pretty much diametrically opposite the Conservative Party, which I have voted for, and UKIP, which I voted for once and, in the light of the recent past, will almost certainly never vote for again. I am not too far from the Greens, for whom I have never considered voting.
