Move mouse over extract, whole post appears! - Dave_
Hey, this is good. When I keep my mouse over one of the six recent posts in the "Forum Posts" box to the right, a window appears with the whole of the text in it! Which saves no end of faffing about clicking on things to load them in my browser.

Has it done that from the start, or is it a new trick that's just been added? Yes, I know I may sound like a bit of a luddite if you've all been doing that for years and I didn't know about it...

New - just come back after tea and noticed it. I quite like the roll-over effect, but I'm not keen on the layout - not enough distinction between posts IMO.

Also, I would still like to be able to go to the thread in flat view by clicking on the link - not threaded view. But I can imagine there are probably more important things on the to-do list :-)

Fixed!

Yes - it was probably a style sheet change that your browser has cached.

So all of you click the refresh button on your browser!

No - just added it. We were going to announce it but you got there first. I suppose it adds to the excitement to leave things for you to find.
I suppose it could go to flat view, but then because we are eliminating clicks which is really bad for ad impressions, it leaves you with another click to get it to flat view.

So basically, what we were going to announce was that we have replaced the RSS reader pane of 6 posts with a new "forum latest posts widget". These can have more functionality on them and can stand more alone from the page content. Have you noticed what else you can do with it?

Also look out for more "widgets" over the next few weeks!

Ok - I understand your reasoning.

Scroll arrows, or something else?

Which ads? :-)

Clever stuff BTW.

...although it doesn't seem to be updating now - top of the list is the first post in this thread.

Use the scroll arrows to move through every post on the site, in time and date order :-)

Although the live updating does indeed appear to have fallen over somewhat.

EDIT: It's been fixed :-) :-)

I think I noticed the start of the change to the Forum Post widget because it didn't change/refresh when moving to a different page. I probably didn't make that clear though.

All those ones that are really relevant to what you are reading - so much so that you can't resist just clicking on them. Only click on the useful ones or you will get RSI, Google will feel sorry for you we get penalised ;-)

Thanks. All good Web 2 tech - ajax and all that. The jquery way of doing it separates the page more from the widget. You can see it load after everything else a bit like the Google ads.
IE seems to be a bit sluggish though and you get to see the white at the bottom of the last post before it gets the content. But then that is IE so what else would we expect.

We thought that once we got this one working, it wouldn't be too hard to get the other ones we want to add working on here too. In a week or so's time. This place has got to have some compelling features.

Ah sorry - I've just disabled my ad-blocker plugin (which I'd forgotten was there) and can see what you mean now. It's now disabled for this site.

EDIT: .. although does that help you if I don't actually click on the ads anyway?

Thanks - we sometimes leave the blocker on here too by accident. Generally we will try not to overdo the ads so that they don't get too troublesome.
Don't know too much about the clicking. I do know you can over click them though and Google can spot this kind of "cheating". I tend to look at the ones that genuinely might be useful. e.g. on a Parking penalty thread here a load of ads came up for motoring law specialists and on their sites some of their FAQs were very interesting and helpful.

In the Forum Posts box, as well as the link to the post itself, would it be possible to turn the forum name into a link to the forum's home page?

yeah - good idea.

I get a lot of google ads in a foreign language. Anybody else?

(We also cannot view BBC iplayer as we come through a foreign provider. Are the two linked?)

c'est le meme pour moi...

Just kidding, Fine for me. I expect google thinks you're offshore.
