For Trump to think about.... - No FM2R
Within the last 50 years, no person on US soil has been killed by anyone from the 7 countries on Trump's immigration 'ban list'

Over the last 20 years on average 1.5 US citizens are killed by foreign terrorists each year.

However, over the same time frame 7 US citizens per year are killed by acts of terror by US citizens.

By comparison, on average per year;

69 are killed by lawnmowers
21 killed by a gun in the hands of someone under the age of 4.
737 killed "in the bedroom"

11,737 shot to death by another American Citizen.

Between 2001 and 2014 440,095 US citizens died on US soil from firearm injuries. In the same period, the total of US citizens killed outside as the result of any terrorist attack was 369.

In 2001 2,983 US citizens died on US soil as a result of acts of terrorism. In that same year 29,573 were shot and killed by US citizens.

A US citizen currently has a 1:7 chance of dying from a heart attack, 1:7 chance of dying from cancer, 1:98 suicide, 1:138,324,873 from the act of a foreign born terrorist, and 0:1 from a person on the visa waiver scheme.

A US citizen is 29 times more likely to die from an asteroid strike than the act of a foreign born terrorist.

Without making a political point, the accuracy of these figures is challenged by the last statement.
It betrays a lack of knowledge of statistics.
Since, as far as I am aware, no US citizen has ever been killed by an asteroid strike in recorded history, then the US citizen's comparative risk in any one year is the number of terrorist caused deaths to infinity.

Whenever I see statistical features, I always want to know who paid for the research, and how large was the sample.

I guess NFM is using some estimate of the asteroid odds.

The problem with the comparison however is that, as a prediction, it extrapolates the foreign born terrorist threat from the historic data. Trump's belief, I'm sure, is that without precautions there would be more in the future than there have been in the past.

He's still unhinged.

Absolutely agree.

Then one has to consider whether Trump's behaviour makes further attacks more or less likely.

>> as far as I am aware, no US citizen has ever been killed by an asteroid strike in recorded history

Mmmm, I wondered about that one myself, since seemingly only person ever has been confirmed as being killed by a meteor[ite] strike and that was an Indian citizen.

However, whilst a big asteroid is rare, one bigger than about 10 km across would kill everyone, all 6 billion of us. That skews the odds. If one of those hit every 100 million years, then your lifetime odds of dying in an impact is 100 million years divided by 70 years = 1 in 1.5 million.

However, it still makes a good point. In any case, I wouldn't take any of the figures as gospel, but reasonable useful for comparisons I think. You can probably get someone to help if you need.

>>It betrays a lack of knowledge of statistics.

Possibly, or perhaps an understanding of my audience, as you have seemingly confirmed.

Maybe Trump has looked across to see how things are developing in Europe.

America is not Europe. Trump needs to invent threats and enemies to pander to and fuel the prejudice that got him elected, and deflect attention from his abysmal record of governmental achievement and failure to meet his election promises.

"America is not Europe."

Don't tell me, Zeddo, you studied geography?

Just offering you some perspective, seeing as you didn't have any,

It's not a matter of foreign born terrorists, as we have found in the UK the problem is home born citizens being radicalised by extreme ideologies imported from abroad.

Clearly. So about those immigration controls he wants.............

And by the way, the number of people killed in the US by US terrorist types still pales into insignificance compared to pretty much every other way of dying.

Which is not to say that it should not be addressed, but perspective and common sense will help.

Everyone in the USA who is not a native Indian is an immigrant

Which reminds me of a tee shirt which I bought in AZ a few years ago....a print of a Native Indian war party, on horseback, looking down from a bluff, and printed underneath, the words "Dept of Homeland Security"

Still makes me smile

Nearly, but not quite.

The 'native Indians' came across the Bering Straits from Mongolia.

The "native" Indians were immigrants once, surely?
For Trump to think about.... - CGNorwich
Not really. The native Americans arrived in an empty continent via the Bering Strait. The concept of immigrqtion requires there to be a state or country to which you can emmigrate.

some cr*ppy statistics, by my count 2001 is within the last 20 years

Trump is a nutter but he was elected by a lot of nutters among the others

Apart from that, a bit like here, what good alternative was there?

Of whom more than half had put the guns in their own mouths.
