Poptastic Tone worth a listen - Iffy
Tony Blackburn is on R2 until 5pm counting down a chart of million-selling singles.

I think he's a brilliant DJ, and some of the records sound pretty good, too.

So who's going to be number one?

Singles don't sell like they used to, so I think it will be an old one.

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, or Mull of Kintyre by Paul McCartney and Wings are possibilities.

Any other suggestions?

Well Candle In the Wind is the biggest selling single in the UK followed by Do They Know Its Rains In Africa by lord Bonowhatsits.

Tell me about it. I was forced to tune to SMOOTH to get away from him. Personality and charisma of road kill.

He really should have been put out to pasture 30 years ago.

...forced to tune to SMOOTH to get away from him...

He did the Smooth breakfast show this morning, as he does most weekends.

Candle in the Wind - the Diana version - is not a bad shout, rats.

Is this show a repeat or am I having deja vu?
Poptastic Tone worth a listen - Iffy
...Is this show a repeat or am I having deja vu?...

New show - the last one was on the 1960s.

I started a thread on that, to, so there's a bit of deja vu.

I bet these singles will by and large show what dross hit the very top of the charts. Likely I haven't owned one of them.

One or two too many 'power ballads' so far for my liking.

Hopefully what's left will be better.

God help us, I was always a John Peel man, and those two never liked each other much.

White Christmas, or am I out of touch?
Poptastic Tone worth a listen - Iffy
...White Christmas...

Not sure if people bought 'singles' in such large numbers when Bing released that, although it will have sold steadily in various formats since then.

Christmas songs are an interesting thought - Tone's already played Last Christmas by Wham.

I'd have thought the Slade one would have sold more, and the original Band Aid looks a good bet for the top three.

Most the stuff I listen to has never charted in the UK yet a lot of them are still very famous songs. The problem with singles is since 1980 has anybody actually bought one who isn't 13?

I bought a few Indie 7"s a few years back and I remember buying Pulp's common people when I was 13 but thats about it.

I suppose now with the download charts singles are coming back into fashion. I just hope a band like Rage Against the Machine can knock Cowel of the top spot again this Christmas!

Actually I tell a lie, I have bought a few Morrissey singles a few years back but only to help him to get to number one, it didn't work he got to number two.

The top five:

5. Brown Girl in the Ring/Rivers of Babylon - Boney M

4. Mull of Kintyre/Girls School - Paul McCartney and Wings.

3. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen.

2. Do They Know it's Christmas - Band Aid.

1. Candle in the Wind/Something About the Way You Look Tonight - Elton John.

A little matter of 33m copies for the number one, according to Tone.

Charity or not, a good few people will have made a nice few quid out of that.

I cannot believe that piece of pathetic, embarrassing drivel outsold The Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd, Hendrix and others too numerous to mention.

The time the nation lost it's marbles.

Candle in the Wind is mawkish sentimental drivel, but I suppose it's only one record.

The artists you list sold many millions of albums and singles, so all is not lost.

Shame it wasn't Elton John in the Mercedes in Paris. Vile man.

I'm fairly indifferent to all royals but I would have done Lady Di.

After Dodi? no way jose

She would never have gone for Dodi if she'd met me first.

I got the top two correct then :). Makes up for my emberassment about Whiskey in the Jar.

At least it wasn't ABBA or Boney M :).
Poptastic Tone worth a listen - Stuartli
>>At least it wasn't ABBA>>

What's wrong with ABBA, Rattle?

Great songs, vocals and arrangements - same for the Carpenters.

Sometimes we don't realise at a particular time just how good some groups or musicians are until much later.
Poptastic Tone worth a listen - BiggerBadderDave
ABBA was a marvel of production.

Pete Waterman talks of how they must have spent weeks and weeks and weeks in the studio getting that wall of sound, multi-tracking voices and harmonies. He says it's no wonder the marriages ended.
Poptastic Tone worth a listen - RattleandSmoke
Not sure if anything which merits a comment from Pete Waterman is worthy of a mention though! That said I have been known to dance to Never Gona Give you Up if they play it as a joke.

I do like the guy though, but respect him for his knowledge of trains rather than music!.

I think that is what I don't like about ABBA its almost a machine which is too polished, that said many of the American rock bands like Guns N Roses are just as bad for that.
Poptastic Tone worth a listen - BiggerBadderDave
"Not sure if anything which merits a comment from Pete Waterman is worthy of a mention though!"

Rattle, if you're so dismissive of the opinion of a guy who has enjoyed enormous success in his field, how do you expect us to take your opinions on computers seriously when you don't have a pot to pee in.
Poptastic Tone worth a listen - RattleandSmoke
ABBA are talanted muscians BUT so are a trillion other bands which sold only a fraction of ABBA did. It is the same with Boney M, nothing wrong with them as such but I don't get how they could sell so many records in this country.

My personal bad taste is the Bee Gee's, they get slated as they are not cool but they were fantastic song writers. People just think of them for their Night Fever stuff and forget about all the other good stuff they have written.

Poptastic Tone worth a listen - Focusless

But none of those trillion other bands could consistently write tunes that appealed to so many people; that was their strength.

And they had their unique sound.

Never been able to get away with the Bee Gees, though.

Long career, sold many records, so good luck to them, but not for me.

ABBA were great. Benny Andersson said in an interview that many of ABBA's songs were sad, but in a good way. 'Sad is good' he said. Thats the swedish way. I don't know why I like them, maybe it's because they remind me of where I was at the time, but each song just sounds so well crafted, they were perfectionists for sure. Also Agnetha and Anni-Frids voices are so strong and clear. It's always good to hear them on the radio.

Did you see the Bee Gee's walk out on Clive Anderson's show a few years back? You could see Barry Gibb getting more and more angry as the interview went on.

...Did you see the Bee Gee's walk out on Clive Anderson's show a few years back?...

Just been listening on and off to a Bee Gee two-hour interview special with Johnnie Walker on R2.

There's been a couple of uncomfortable moments.

I get the impression Walker's walking on eggshells with whichever Gibb he's talking to.

They sound a bit precious to me.

"He had fancier boots than you"

Probably how they identified him.

BBD,

There's some evidence to suggest she liked a bit of rough, so you might have stood a chance.

But only on the side, she liked to spend a lot and gallivant around the world, so any partner would need huge resources to underwrite her activities.
Poptastic Tone worth a listen - BiggerBadderDave
Yes I would have wanted a relationship with her, just a few twonks and maybe slap her around a bit.
Poptastic Tone worth a listen - BiggerBadderDave

Personality and charisma of road kill.

Hardly fair to road kill. I'd sooner have a rotting fox in the car then listen to that pathetic old fool.
Poptastic Tone worth a listen - Iffy
...listen to that pathetic old fool...

His broadcasting style is matter of taste, but he's certainly no fool.

Blackburn's made a long and successful career out of, arguably, a modest amount of talent.
Poptastic Tone worth a listen - Zero
Far far too long.

The reason he is on the radio a lot is because he is cheap.
Poptastic Tone worth a listen - Iffy

Smooth breakfast show twice a week and the very occasional special for R2.

 Poptastic Tone worth a listen - R.P.
We listened to this on part of our trip today - R4 wasn't available apparently in the MX5 option list. The lowlight was that discordant Whiney Houston mangling some song or other I lost the will to live after "Football's Coming Home" - the whole thing spoke volumes.
Poptastic Tone worth a listen - Focusless
>> The lowlight was that discordant Whiney Houston mangling some song

Didn't hear it but I'm guessing that's 'I will always love you'? Never sing one note where you can squeeze in 5. Personally I much prefer Dolly Parton's simpler original rendition, which I've got on 7" somewhere.
Poptastic Tone worth a listen - Iffy
...that's 'I will always love you'?...

Certainly was.

Dreadful record - real emotion for those who live in council houses.

There were a few too many 'power ballads' in the countdown for my liking.

Heart's Alone was in there too was it ?

Dunno - Dunno what they were smoking at R2 earlier on (lunchtime) but they were playing Christmas songs, including Slade.

One of my favourite tunes, I've loved Dolly Parton since I was sooooo high. I like a bit of country.

Whitney Houston should be tied to a rocket and shot into space for what she did to that song.

Dolly made a pile of dough out of Whiney's warble.

Yeah that's right up my street.

And yes, I'd do her.
Poptastic Tone worth a listen - RattleandSmoke
My comment about Waterman is similar to what Clarkson things about Cowels musical opinions. They both know a lot about producing teeny bob records and selling millions of products in a commercial environment. It is just 'music' for the masses, its not going to set the world on fire. It just gave us a load of now 22 year olds called Kylie.
