I'm looking for a recommendation for a gift up to around £100, maybe a bit more.

When you say Brandy is the definition limited to French Cognac?

An Armagnac would be something different. Cognac is more the export version of brandy.

Probably means cognac. Believe it or not, there are different styles of cognac and an habitual buyer will possibly have a preference. For a gift £100+ look at XO cognac. Can't go wrong with Hennessy or Remy Martin. Hine and Otard are others I've had. For myself I'd be very happy with Remy VSOP at £40 ish.

I'm not a cognac specialist. Many years ago I came back from the Maison (Otard are in Cognac and it's a great factory tour, Hennessey's was good too) with a bottle of Otard XO that I thought wonderful, but there's a bit of psychology involved!

No idea, I really know very little about it!!

Remy Martin Tercet has a catchy name :-) The similarly priced Remy XO bottle size is half that of the Tercet (so I presume better). It's usually quantity over quality for me but then I'm a heathen about most things.

Tercet sounds a good option.

Can I jump in with a question re port please?

How long does a bottle of port last. I have been given an unopened bottle that has been kept in the dark for 18 years, originally from Fortnum and Masons.

Will it be OK or will it have gone off?

If the cork has been kept wet i.e. it has been horizontal, it should be drinkable.

Port can age for 30-40 years or more. Even LBV that is intended to be supped more or less immediately should age if stored.

You can only try it. Check it's not a valuable vintage before opening! If it's out of a hamper it's probably LBV.

When my 99yo aunt died six years ago we found an unopened bottle of 40 yo + Port.
If laid down with a wet cork it would have been worth a shed load of money. So we were told.
Unfortunately it had been stored upright in a wardrobe. Worth nowt.
You live & learn.

Brandy ? Can't stand the stuff ! Rather drink brake fluid.

Found oud out something else, son bought me a bottle of Woodford Reserve bourbon. Tried a nip with lemonade. Repulsive stuff, offered the bottle to SiL and got a refusal.

I'll stick with my almost full bottle of Jura malt thank you velly mutch ! Not had a drink of anything for over three weeks due to anti-biotics. Roll on !
