I've always remembered Brakspear's from long, long ago at a nice country pub in Sussex.
I actually thought it was spelt Brakespear's for some reason, but I stand corrected.
It not un-like a decent pint of Harveys IIRC.

Dog,...I always assumed Brakespear's although not a local brew to us.
However, I do have 17 items of proof that there's no E in it........come and check one out !

If you go to

www.locatetv.com/

then you can search for anything from film titles to tv shows to people, and it tells you when they're next on tv on any channel. If they're not on somewhere in the next little while then you can have it email you when they are.

Excellent if you want to see when Jenny Agutter is next appearing in anything at all, as obviously we all do.

But its *always* the railway children.

If I hear her shout "daddy my daddy" one more time. I will throw her under the chuffing train.

I just tried it - there are 23 chances to see her in the next two weeks! Starting with Spooks, whatever that is.

Trains don't generally ' chuff ' any more. Any road up, it was the locomotive that chuffed.

Pedant mode off now . :-O

£1.80 a pint thats not too bad. Cheapest 'club' in Manchester charges £1.70 but rather worryingly I never get drunk of it so I suspect it is watered down.

Another favourite of mine Jilly's charges £2.30 a pint which is not bad for a night club.

Ended up paying £3.60 a pint in a few places last week :(

Personaly its why I love Wetherspoons as they do so much choice of booze at good prices.

I think the biggest con in Manchester is the bottles. I paid £2.20 for a bottle of Carlsberg on Saturday but then all they played is the Smiths/Morrissey/Cure/Stone Roses and New Order so didn't complain too much!

Sadly on Friday going to a club where its £1.80 a bottle or £3.60 a can of Red Stripe thats going to hurt! Then on Sunday got to go to a 30th of Birthday party in one of the most expensive bars in the city. I then may escape to Yorkshire.

Nothing can beat 8 euros for Kronenberg in Paris back in 2003 though!

Yep and is one reason I am not going to be leaving blyty any time soon. I have far too much of the UK to see and support.

It shows how long since I've been in a pub - well at least been in a pub and paid attention to the prices. After lunch break at college today, one of the other mature(!) students came in complaining of being stung £2.20 for a lemonade and lime.

I recall offering a £20 note for 3 double Vodka Red Bulls on my 30th birthday and being asked for the extra £1.20, and that wasn't even in a nightclub.
off to the club £1.80 a pint - RattleandSmoke
Ouch! I would have refused to pay that cheeky pfd's

Last saturday I went out with my mate and his girlfriend, had two bottles at home, then had three pints in bars, then had three cans in the club, I came home with change out of £25.00

The bars I went to were expensive too!

Happy Days, We had Liston's Music Hall before the Arndale came along.
Just one room, bar at one end, piano at the other. Wood floor, sawdust, Chester's Fighting Mild on tap at about 3 bob !
Took Erin Dors in when we were stepping out. About '67.
She was a bit nervous. I told her not to worry...it was me they were eyeing up ! Never risked a trip to the Gents though !
Used to chat with a tranny from the place occasionally when I was on nights. She/he was gorgeous, always well turned out, and very erudite, but the voice and legs gave the game away !

I spent a thoroughly agreeable afternoon yesterday with my brother in a bar within a hotel in Southport. £1.85 for a pint of Flag & Turret, a very lovely bitter brewed especially for the bar. If any of you are ever in Southport and have an hour or two to kill, then I can heartily recommend Baron's Bar within The Scarisbrick Hotel on Lord Street. As well as F&T, they have around seven other guest ales as well as proper cloudy cider.

Was in Asda today gricing the alcoholics section.
Noticed 3 beers at £1 a bottle so bought half a dozen mixed......can't remember what they were but I'll report back in due course.
Hic.

For beers at home theres an emporium i frequent that has end of line out of date beers at exceedingly good prices
I particularly look out for eastern european ales but i only like my beers cold never at room temperature, last time i had a beer in emmerdale farm country in a back room and the beer was by the measured jug into a glass i swore i would never do it again
I always when going into a strange bar never have the first pint of the day out of the puller as its been there ages will be warm and not of the quality the brewer wanted,i usually ask for the pubs most popular brew from the handpumps.
Its also a pity that landlords cant pull off a pint and have the dregs go back into the barrel like they could years ago, it never did me no harm,i also like my glass once ive got it as only one set of germs is on it,i hate it when pubs insist i have a clean glass everytime, proper pubs understand my needs and let me keep my original one through out my proceedings.

Badwolf, beers can be even cheaper up the road at Wetherspoons (or so I'm told)...:-)

The Brick has always been noted for its excellent range of beers (and food), whether in the public bars or one of the various function suites.

Talking of Pubs, although we're only 3 miles from the City Centre, one of our locals has been continuously licenced since about 1780 although the building dates from 1520 !
Not bad for a City pub !

Here's a photo, taken in 1952 and showing a rare example of a prototype Escort Van. :-)

Another pub which is sadly gone :(. Well the pub has been refurbished and the pool tables and juke box have gone. Its now a place I eat in rather than drink in. I have many happy memories from my earlier drinking days in that pub.

I remember my sister used to go in there with her mates and teachers when she was 16-17.

Nice to see your Jewett outside the pub :).

You certainly won't be getting pints for £1.80 in there anymore :(

The building is also a bit of a fake, the tudor style beams were only added 100 years ago and its only a small part of the original building inside which is 500 miles years old. Still got to be one of the oldest pubs in Manchester though.

Teddy ... I am a tad flummoxed - is that your Javelin taken in the year I was bjorn?

Ted, there's an even rarer prototype Renault, possibly a Laguna, on the left. You should keep that photo, could be worth a fortune sometime.

It's ' Flummox a Dog ' week here. There's another car behind mine which could also be a prototype but I trimmed a bit off on Photobeucket.

I actually took the pic, and another, to match two in our club magazine sent in by a 93 yr old member who had snapped his Jowett there in about 1935 !
It was a lot more difficult now, with all the parking, to actually get a space to put mine in !

I'll be printing some off, just watch the offers roll in !

I could never get Mr. Umgonna interested in todays Euroboxes,
but these proper jamjars of yesteryear really do turn me on.
I got to 'work' on the likes of Daimler Dart, MGA, MGC old Bentleys old Jags, too many nice old cars to mention here.
I notice that the Javelin had a flat four engine, hydraulic tappets & torsion bar suspenders.
Some car then me ole mate :)

You're not wrong there, but Baron's Bar has a bit more charm to it.

We're having our wedding reception at The Scarisbrick at the end of May and chose it on the strength of the good times (and great food) that we have had at the various 'theme' evenings that they put on.

Just went to a club tonight, £6 in and £3.40 a pint. It was so busy we only stayed for 45 minutes as it was too busy to be fun.

The sad thing is partly owned by a big hero of mine Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order) but now in his 50's he has sold out and its purely about £££. This is very anti Manchester and I am not happy. I shall be emailing him tomorrow to ask why he has sold his soul.

We ended up in a club we used to frequent years ago, great door staff, £4 in and £1.70 a pint, sadly for me the music was too catch all (everything from Michael Jackson to Limp Biskit) - it doesn't work. They did at least play some Paul Simon.
off to the club £1.80 a pint - Iffy
Crikey, five or six bands/musicians mentioned above and I've heard of them all.

I'd struggle to name a Limp Bizkit hit, but I am familiar with the name.

Rattolo, are you seriously telling me Paul Simon is a 'name' on the Manchester club scene?

Homeward Bound, Diamonds on the Soles of Your Shoes - that Paul Simon?

Do tell me which of his songs they played.

off to the club £1.80 a pint - RattleandSmoke
The club I went to is a very good club but the music dosn't work, its dance on minute and Paul simon the next. They played "Call me Al". A Ska version of Mrs Robinson is sometimes played in the Ska clubs.

In terms of bands played in the indie clubs it is about as stereo typical as you get but thankfully not just band stuff. On a typical night I would expect to here a lot of this stuff.

Stone Roses, New Order, Joy Division, The Cure, The Clash, The Smiths, Morrissey, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Damned, Oasis (actually not that popular in manc for the some reason), Pulp, Happy Mondays, James, Charlatons, The Killers, REM etc.

It depends om the club too but at the moment I would say the Stone Roses, Morrissey and the Smiths are the most popular acts played in clubs. One of the clubs we go to is pretty much pure Manc stuff and they play all the slightly more unusual album tracks from the above artists.

In other clubs its more typical rock such as AC/DC/Aerosmith etc. The one genre I don't get is dance and rnb, but it is a completly different scene people who are into dance would not understand why 15000 people in some grotty club could dance to Love Will Tear Us Apart or I am a Reserection.

Rattle,

Thanks for that.

I'd probably be the oldest swinger in your town, but I'd know the words to most of the songs. :)

> very anti Manchester

What planet are you living on Rats my old mate? Manchester is now just London with funny accents.
off to the club £1.80 a pint - Bellboy
aint nuthin going on but the rent
anyway, its madchester, not manchester in the music scene
off to the club £1.80 a pint - RattleandSmoke
Manchester is loosing its identity in some ways but as a legacy from the Hacienda era in the early 90's when Manchesrer became the coolest city in the UK the young 18 year old students coming into Manchester just cannot get enough of Madchester.

The scene really starts from 1976 with the Buzzcocks to current bands like the Whip and Courteeners.

What I have always loved about the Smiths apart from Morrissey's wonderful way with words and Marr's guitar playing is fact that I know all the places mentioned in the lyrics.

so wheres maudlin street then because this charming man with his hand in his glove has just been to see his girlfriend in a korma and needs to know how soon is now because shakespeares sister is panic ing because that joke isnt funny anymore and he even i think mentions my street because we have a light that never goes out

Look rats. Morrissey is a miserable self obsessed run of the mill muscian with an overblown sense of his own work. Not suprised people thow bottles at him when he wails his laments of a utopia only he wants.
