 Cultural Ignorance - Crankcase
Just looked on Google Zeitgeist, which tells you "what the world is searching for".

This is the "fastest rising" list, which I take to be "most popular".

I've heard of three of these out of ten (2,8,10). How about you?

Fastest Rising
1. chatroulette
2. ipad
3. justin bieber
4. nicki minaj
5. friv
6. myxer
7. katy perry
8. twitter
9. gamezer
10. facebook

5! No idea about 1, 4, 5, 6 or 9, although all except 4 sound like websites.

EDIT: snap :)

I've only heard of the same three - two of which I wouldn't dream of using, the other I have no need of as I have a CD player.

Yes, I'd rather listen to a CD of doors opening than use twitter too.

2,8,10....that's my tally as well.

1. chatroulette - who?
2. ipad - oh dear!
3. justin bieber who?
4. nicki minaj who?
5. friv who?
6. myxer who?
7. katy perry -she is quite hot
8. twitter - ok
9. gamezer - who?
10. facebook - use it.

However I keep well away from popular culture. I hate chart music or anything like that. Good music may well be in the charts, but I don't need the charts to tell me what is good music or what I should be listening to.

That isn't culture. It's just chatter. Monkeys in the trees.

Those people who have heard of Nicki Minaj - looked her up en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicki_Minaj and none the wiser. Have you heard of her via UK sources or from abroad (US)? Even my 14 year old son hadn't heard of her when asked just now, although to be fair he's into rock/metal.

You need to have exposure to some R&B, as I do through my son.

Ah, that explains it. Not much of that in this household.

Five mp3 tracks featuring Ms Minaj on my computer:

will.i.am ft Nicki Minaj- Check It Out
Jay Sean ft Nicki Minaj - 2012 (It Ain't The End)
Willow Smith ft Nicki Minaj - Whip My Hair Back And Forth
Mariah Carey ft Nicki Minaj - Up Out My Face
Gyptian ft Nicki Minaj - Hold Yuh

If you listen to Capital, Kiss or Radio 1 you'll recognise at least some of them.

I only know about iPad, Facebook & Twitter.

But then most web users are very young and my mindset is quite different from theirs :o)

Never heard of chat roulette, so I looked it up.

It seems to consist of video chats of men flashing their willies, hopefully at a female flashing her frupney bits , but who invariably end up with another bloke flashing his willy.

2, 3, 7, 8, and 10, definitely, and possibly Nicki Minaj because I remember thinking something very childish about her second name.

A bit like this forum, then :)

The only RnB in this house is erm none. My sister used to like it before he taste became generic indie but she is getting quite into classical folk now too.

I would say folk rock is probably the biggest influence in this house and even I am big fans of writers such as Dylan and Euwan MacColl.

American hip hop/rap and RnB have just never influenced me. I like a lot of American bands but they are all guitar based.

Ian Curtis is a legend with my group of mates, we have even been to the cemetry in Macclesfield etc. Yet to most cultures he a name nobody will have heared off.

But then my world of punk festivals is probably a lot more alien to the majority than the people on that list.

There's one or 2 R&B tracks I really like eg. Mary J Blige 'Family Affair'

Surely you've boogied on down to that at a nightclub Ratts?

I only ever go to Punk/Rock/Indie or ska nights.

Got a 70's punk and early 80's post punk night tomorrow, and possibly my usual rock venue on Saturday which has too rooms, everything from Ska, punk and classic rock.

Some of the younger rock venues sometimes cross into the hip hop genre but we are getting a bit old for those type of commercial places. The usual Rock night does end up being pure cheese in form of Kiss or Bon Jovi though but it is great because of it!.

...Whoa .... oa, livin on a prayer...

They've just played that on Absolute Radio, which I'm now reduced to after The Arrow shut down its DAB service.

I thought I'd listen to Absolute for as long as it took them to plug 25 companies' goods or services.

My count bought me about five records.

Everything, but everything on there is sponsored by somebody or 'in association' with somebody else.

It's not music radio, it's product placement, promotion and advertising interrupted by the occasional record.

You sound like my wife :)

Did you see that documentary about him on the road last year? He came across as quite moody and thoughtful, and very deep. Or I got the impression that that was the impression he was trying to give - if the programme had been described as a spoof then it would have been pretty funny in places. But it wasn't so I didn't dare laugh in case SWMBO hit me.

EDIT: nothing against the man - he's written some cracking tunes

Yes, I did see it and I have Mr pda trained to NOT make remarks when I'm watching my 'other men':) The same rules apply to Robbie Williams.

I think that's global - just looked up the UK's results:
www.google.com/intl/en/press/zeitgeist2010/regions/uk.html

Some commonality, and still don't recognise the 'fastest-rising' person, 'kristian digby'.

BTW it has separate lists for 'fastest-rising'

1. chatroulette
2. formspring
3. ipad
4. justin bieber
5. world cup 2010
6. fb
7. santander
8. hotmail sign in
9. youtube
10. metcheck

and 'most popular':

1. facebook
2. bbc
3. youtube
4. hotmail
5. ebay
6. google
7. you
8. games
9. mail
10. news

Ok, sorry - that was the BBC presenter who was found dead, leading to a brief spike in searches at the time.

I'm surprised twitter is missing from the list in which facebook is number one.

I thought people who used one tended to use the other.

But as I neither use nor understand either site, I could be wrong.

1, 2, 8, 10.

Not that I have any expertise in any of them.

>>

1. chatroulette - Heard of it, I prefer Omegle myself.

2. ipad - Yes, yes, bigger phone for show-offs.

3. justin bieber - Apparently occupies 3% of Twitter's server capacity at any given moment.

4. nicki minaj - An X-Factor contestant cited this US "artiste" as an idol in a Richard Madeley interview - Madeley's response was "Who?"

5. friv - ??

6. myxer - ??

7. katy perry - Kissed a girl and liked it.

8. twitter - Oh heck, I spend more time on this than on Facebook.

9. gamezer - ??

10. facebook - So 2010, darlings.

So that's 7/10 for me. My excuse is that I have to be fairly up-to-date in order that my children will talk to me occasionally.
 Cultural Ignorance - NortonES2
I haven't progressed much beyond the Incedible String Band stuff: www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1yQ1GKzoC0&feature=watch_response_rev

Nothing since matches it. Far more pointless than the 1-10 mediocrity listed:)
