Some of you may recall the ITV current affairs programme World in Action. R4 broadcast a fascinating documentary on how this programme was ultimately responsible for clearing the Birmingham Six.

A proper programme and about when proper programmes were actually broadcast on TV.

Yes, I recall World in Action. I used to watch it. Back when Panorama was a proper programme too.

Friend of mine was a cameraman on WiA. Retired now.

There's a large framed monochrome photo in his hall, He''s sat on the balcony of a room about 7 floors up, looking out over Beirut. Looks like Berlin in 1945. He got shot as well, fortunately not too seriously.

WiA always seemed very serious and grown up to me when I was a kid, even the theme tune seemed very grown up.

Can't say I ever watched it but hazy memories of other notable stories such as death of a princess - stoned to death in Saudi - and death on the rock - alleged IRA activists executed by special forces. Common theme?
