As incredible as it seems, they can apparently make quite a bit of money.

Very few people will respond, but then it's easy to send lots of emails. Of the ones that do get snared, they tend to pay a small about of money at the start (perhaps some kind of processing fee), but are then reeled in slowly. "If I've paid £200, I might as well pay about £100, rather than lose the £200". Just investment theory, the more time and money you've spent, the harder it is to stop.

Seems like there were about 5,000 reported victims in the UK in 2006, losing about £30,000 on average.

Yes, you kindly allowed him to use your email account.

This thread inspired me to clear my spam. This time I had a look at all the origins and found a couple that might not be spam. I've shoved them in my inbox and cleared the rest.

One is from Tooltime ( Not Viagra ! )...I'll have a look later.

I was surprised to see a couple from Halifax on-line banking, which I do use. They normally go in my inbox and usually tell me a new doc has arrived. The first one I opened was this:-

Dear Customer,

Please note that starting from September 05, 2011 we will be introducing new online banking
authentication procedures in order to protect the private information of all online banking users.

You are required to confirm your online banking details with us as you will not be able to
have access to your accounts until this has been done.

As you're already registered for online banking all you need to do is to confirm
your online banking details.

Confirm your details

Once you've completed this you'll be able to manage your money whenever you want,
giving you more control of your finances.

Best wishes,

Security Team
Halifax Online Service

Hmmm, right, so you want my password and memorable word ? You've got more chance asking me directly for the money ! I'll speak to the bank tomorrow.

The rest of the spam seems to assume I've got a tiny tadger, need a cheap watch, some money or a bra ( which I might well do )

Be alert...Britain needs lerts !

Ted

I think people should have to pass a common sense test before ever being allowed to use the internet. My grandma will fail it, which is why we don't encourage her to learn.

Some on most forums would fail such a test though :-)
