Do only salmon leap? - Iffy
Staring idly out of the caravan window this morning, I saw a fish leap from the stream.

As this is a fishy story, there's a temptation to exaggerate, but I reckon the fish was about 18 inches clear of the water.

It was about nine inches long, an unremarkable grey colour, with a dull white underside.

I've seen fish activity in the stream before, they sometimes make a splash, but this is the first time I've seen one clear the water.

I'm guessing it was a river trout catching a fly.

Any thoughts on the type of fish and its behaviour?

As it was about 9" long I think its probably a Brown Trout, possibly a Salmon Parr or even a Grayling, but best bet is Trout. Likely to have been a late hatch of Midges or sand-flies due to the unseasonably hot weather.,

see all sorts of fish jump in the canal, either after the flies or being chased by the stinking great pike that lurks about in there.

Our goldfish used to leap . Sometimes on a sunny day they'd leap up onto a lilly pad and bask for a bit before flipping back into the water. But now the heron has had them all.

...I think its probably a Brown Trout...

Thanks, Devonite.

Almost certainly is, I described the colour as grey, but it did have a brown tinge.

A couple of years ago a lad fishing on the opposite bank caught one.

He said he was going to barbecue it that evening, and reckoned it was big enough for a small meal for one.
