I've thought for a while you don't hear Facebook talked about as much as previously - it's all twitter.

I don't use either, but for research I looked at the Facebook accounts of two acquaintances, and both appeared dormant.

Two real people I spoke to recently said they were no longer users.

My sample of four out of an estimated 800m Facebook accounts may not be representative, but I also found this:

What do you think?

I guess you are probably researching the wrong audience. I suspect not many facebook or Twitter users on the forum. I guess that both have lost some of their initial users once the novelty wore off but I don't think social networking is going to go away anytime soon.

Maybe it's a generational thing - my cohort group seem to use FB a great deal whereby use by younger friends seems to have tailed off - there's also Google's version to add to the mix.

its a bit like "Friends reunited" - when it first came out, loads of people filled out their details and I'm sure many people got back in contact with long lost friends and loved ones, but most people don't update their profile for years, so it just dies out, or gets taken over by a new means of communication - there will be anew form appearing soon , just wish it was me who could come up with the idea !!

Deleated my facebook account a few months back after not using for several months before and real friends can ring me or call round, it's all a load of dogs danglers.

Add at least 10 people using Google+ to your circles to make sure your experience is awesome!

A quote from Google+ - "awesome" eh ?

That's why FB is going to float soon. They discovered if they wait longer, the novelty may wore of even more.

I did open a/c in both FB and Twitter but never used them other than occasional tweets.

Don't use either anymore.

I use Facebook. Sort of. Its a bit of a nosey neighbour syndrome.

I very rarely post, I have some friends who post rarely and some who are close to telling you every piece of food they ate and every bowel movement they have had.

I don't put photos on it, why I don't know, maybe just hanging onto the last bit of privacy I have!

Every week I will "block" on average 2 of my friends as they are boring me to tears.
Every week, at least once, my finger will hover over the delete account button as I wrestle with my inner self on privacy, commercialism etc.

But, it is a good medium for businesses - our Hospice use it a lot and have generated much interest and even recently sold the Chevrolet Matiz on the back of a Facebook link.

...But, it is a good medium for businesses...

Several of the comments in the linked article mentioned that.

It seems users are driving Facebook in that direction.

I use it a lot. I don't generally add people I haven't actually met more than once or know in other ways reasonably well. There's also the lists feature so you can choose who sees which status updates. I put casual acquaintances in a separate group so they'd generally only see a smaller proportion of activity.

It's great for keeping in touch with people as it is more passive. You don't have to remember to write an email, you can see what they're up to and comment directly. Much quicker.

When daughter got married it was suggested all guests with cameras posted their pictures on facebook. It worked well as it meant everyone could see everybody's photos.

Other daughter's getting married next year, so I'll guess we'll do the same again. I offered to sell the Kia to pay for it, she suggested I'd get more for my bike. Don't tell her the winter fuel payment went in today.

I use it a lot too.
Last year it was invaluable. While my husband was in intensive care I could not cope with the number of calls - and was amazed how many people (several no more than acquaintances) thought it was appropriate to call the unit! Initially I asked for texts, but when they got up to a 1,000 + I decided to use Facebook for daily updates. These were carefully thought out so those in the know could read between the lines and younger friends would not be upset. It made things easier for all - and is a sort of diary of the time which I will go back to one day.
I play interactive games on it when awake at night, communicate with overseas friends and often catch up with members of the family living at the other end of the country - plus one who works on a ship.
My children seem very active on it.

I use Facebook to keep in touch with family and friends and to keep an eye on what the younger generations are thinking and doing. It is, however, much more complicated to follow after recent changes - maybe because I don't involve myself in any of its add-ons - and I am losing patience with it.
I could never imagine myself doing 'tweets'. Who is this 'Justin Bieber' anyway?

I use Facebook to keep on top of club nights as a lot of alternative nights are monthly or less.

I have noticed it isn't as busy as it used to be too. A few months ago I was replying or posting every hour or so on it, these days its not even one a day.

I was on FB for about a year before I deleted my account. When friends of friends kept sending me friend requests I decided I'd had enough, and those people who I hadn't seen for years made me realise why I hadn't seen them for years after we made contact.

My f/b account is configured to filter out all the junk game requests, pointless waffle and tripe. I have two main filter options on there - one to allow some users to see my photos and one to allow some users to read my wall. I've gone through my friend list and added some people to one group, some to both and some to neither.

It works for me exactly as it's supposed to. I receive only relevant updates from family and friends, and those few acquaintances who keep trying to send me free poker chips or whatever, can't. In fact it's been so long since I've received that kind of post, I'd forgotten how bad it could be.

As most of my friends have careers, young children and other family commitments themselves, f/b helps us to stay in touch much more readily than was possible in the days before always-on phones and internet. I can't see it going anywhere any time soon.

EDIT: Also, I'm not searchable on there. If I want to add someone, I'll do it in front of them on my phone.

I use it and have noticed that increasing numbers of my friends don't. Still it's a great way of keeping in touch.

I use Greasemonkey and scripts run by that add-on, to filter out a lot of FB's unwanted carp.
You can even have a snazzy colour scheme if you want!

If you think Facebook is on the wane then take a look at MySpace! In 2005 it was worth $580 million. This it was sold for just $35 million.

All the fault of Facebook's automatic mechanism for interrogating their email address books, not the fault of the friends of friends, almost certainly.

Facebook doesn't automatically send friend requests, it only highlights mutual friends. It's then a one-click procedure to send a friend request, but then it's also a one-click procedure to reject unwanted ones.
