PCT NHS funding - Anybody with direct knowledge? - RattleandSmoke
This is a long story I will cut short. I live in the city of Manchester, but I also live just a few minutes walk from Trafford.

I went to a dentist in Trafford as it was easy to get to and easy parking. I need some work done and my dentist suggested this other dentist who uses Valium would be better for me. For work I need valium is not covered under the NHS, but Trafford PCT will pay for it. I got my referral today but the website says that none Trafford residents would have to pay £250 per session (so in my case around £2k!).

I phoned the practice up and reception staff seemed to think because I was refereed by a Trafford PCT dentists I would only have to pay the usual NHS dental rates.

I got the impression they were not certain though, got my appointment next week so I will know for sure then, but I just wondered if anybody here knew how it worked as I may be back to square one :(

Good grief.

You could always go to your GP saying "I need dental work and my anxiety makes me afraid I'll cack myself during treatment - can I get a couple of valium please."

My usual response to such a request would involved acquiring a hike, but if you asked your GP to google "rattleandsmoke" you'd get your valium.

Or sectioned ;-)

Knowing Rattle's typing/spelling, does he really mean Valium?

I thought he might not as he's talking about dentists. Can a dentist even prescribe/use Valium?

Yep this dentist practice specialises in nervous patients and always give Valium however it is private treatment in many parts of the country, but in Trafford the PCT will fund it.

It might not valium as such, as its injected but the idea is it calms you down so you're not bothered what is going on around you

Edit just read it, its actually a sedation this dentist uses.

>> pay £250 per session (so in my case around £2k!).

So you need 8 sessions?

Double check you're covered before proceeding. Also check with the dental hospital at the University to see what is on offer.

Yeah its not urgent stuff though, I thought the dental hospital was referrals or emergency only, but it might be I can find another Manchester PCT dentist who could refer me there.

I have no idea how many sessions I would need, but need a few fillings and a couple of crowns not sure about any root canals as I have not had the xray results yet. It will be discussed next week.

If you can trust someone training then it's free and supervised. Maybe not for you.

Yes get the x-rays etc. If you did need a few fillings and some form of 'help' (Valium) then it might be no more than a few sessions anyway.

This is the injection my dentist things I need.

Had it before at the dental hospital when I was a kid, all I remember is my dad having to drag me back from the road as I stepped out into it, as I so confused.

As a child I once had 'gas' to remove a milk tooth. No memory of it. But I threw up everywhere :-) Serves 'em right I say. Inflicting pain on a child.

But do you really want to be sedated whilst someone is wielding a power tool in your mouth?

If thing go wrong you want your wits about you

Apparently you're alert enough to know what is going on, that is the entire point, so if something is painful you can shout stop etc. However it makes forget everything. I had that gas too once, I don't remember it being very pleasant at all, but I think things have moved on since.

I'd imagine they use midazolam.

Very similar effect to rohypnol.

Don't worry if you have a sore bum when you come to..

it's a 'side effect' of the drug.

More likely the rest of the forum would be prescribed valium :-)

Don't bother with the valium. Get some hypnosis treatment in first and just deal with the anxiety. I hate the dentist and would always have gas. That was only a fiver a go. Gas works fine. You remember everything but you don't actually care less about being worked on. If you have too much you'll feel sick.

If you need 8 lots of it by the time you have got to the third or fourth you'll be used to it anyway.

Come down and see my wife, she's so good you won't need any Valium. But Surrey is not too convenient for you!
