What is like an iPad, but cheaper? - Roger.
My daughter's plea, on FB:-

"My boy will be 10 soon and wants to get an ipad type device. Does anybody have any recommendations as to what sort of tablet might be good value for a young fella?"

Any suggestions without paying silly money? We will be contributing, of course!

Spamcan Junior (10) is getting along nicely with a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7 incher

100 notes if a refurb is acceptable:-

If not, £130 new at PC World at the moment: tinyurl.com/k22qms4

+1 for the Galaxy Tab.

However, it is an Android not an iPad. I prefer it, but 10 yr olds can be fickle.

True, I'm hoping they really mean 'an iPad type device' when they 'say' it.

Focusless link does not work for me so not sure if he is talking about the same thing or not but we have just bought two Versus 16GB 8" tablets, one for my son (5) to replace his two year old cream-crackered one which had been shared by everyone, the other for my wife and daughter(7).
SWMBO'd wanted something book shaped rather than lug her Win8 laptop with touchscreen around. Still worked out cheaper for the laptop and separate tablet than buying one of the laptops whose screen detaches.

Daughter uses it for learning apps, she has dysgrammatism, which is emphasised with her being bilingual.

The two tablets have been great so far - one month in.

No - it's Spamcan's Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7 8GB but brand new (£130) rather than refurb (£100). Sorry - FWIW link still works for me.

With the new (and much improved) Google Nexus 7 out (once they fix the GPS and screen problems)... will drive down prices surely. The current/old Nexus 7 likely to be a bargain soon.

I bet he said he wanted an ipad not that he wanted an ipad type device.

I suspect that what is good value will not be a criterion in the boy's judgement of the present. The ipad mini is the the thing to have and I anything else will likely be a let down.

Ipads have by far the best range of Apps especially games and that's what he will want to use it for.

Yup. No child says "I want an ipad device"

Indeed the child wants an Ipad, and Ipad mini is ideal. One thing is for sure, it will get dropped and broken.

Just to pick on that, what is it with people with Iphones, have they all got dropsy? Never seen so many with cracked screens.

No.
All you need to do is look too hard at an Iphone for its screen to crack.... ;-)

Actually he is quite a serious boy - he has a tidy bedroom, (!!!) unlike his 7 yr going on 17 yr sister, who would have been a flower-power child in an earlier time!!

A case is an absolute essential. Apple's own is the best (and the most expensive) at £30
