Just an observation really.

I like laptops. I know they don't have the power of a good desktop but their convenience makes up for that.

I am noticing an unpleasant trend though. Laptop batteries are no longer easily replacable.

My work Lenovo had a new swapable battery and in its 5 year life it had 3 new batteries all easily replacable as they were separate packs. It was used a lot on battery.

The replacement laptop, a HP has its battery sealed within the laptop, so a replacement will require a visit to an office to get it sorted. Not a change for the better IMHO.

The other issue I see with laptops is difficult to replace power pins. These can often break. On a Dell that I had the connector was attached to the motherboard by a ribbon cable so swapping it out was easy. My lad's laptop's power connector is soldered directly to the motherboard so replacing it is going to cost.

Same with many mobiles - the battery is no longer an easy swap.

I guess it's a sign of the disposable age.

My lad had same issue with, IIRC, a Lenovo. It fell on the floor after being left on a chair arm in his Uni shared house. Tests with a multimeter showed the PSU giving nil volts so it was replaced but laptop would still not take charge.

At that point I took it to a professional who, after being initially optimistic of prospect of repair discoverd impact had killed joints on MoBo and thing was beyond economic repair.

It's easier to replace batteries in laptops than you think, manufacturers know it's going to happen so they make it relatively easy for their service partners.

Changed the battery on my MacBook air, new one even came with the pentelobe screwdrivers to do the job. It was the work of 10 mins and the aid of a YouTube video
