Replacement for Psion 5 MX - Perky Penguin
I have had one of these and like it and have grown used to using it. The touchscreen has failed, which may or may not be a cheap or simple fix. I am considering buying some sort of PDA or tablet device to replace it. The essential feature, for me, is to set multiple alarms for events and for this to be very LOUD! There is a tablet called an Archos which has had poor reviews and I am wondering if any IPAQ PDAs have alarms? If I went to an i Phone does that have a multiple alarm function? Advice welcome! Thanks

Have you considered one of the cheap tablets on offer?

£85 ?!!!! I suspect that you will get your money's worth.

See www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/smartphones/363019/next-7in-media-tablet

"The worst tablet PC we’ve yet seen, it's frustrating to use and symptomatic of the droves of Android hardware being produced on the cheap

So as the £85 one is even cheaper....

Fancy a Psion 5? Not sure if my old (unused one) is the MX version. :-)

You can set multiple alarms in any combination on an Iphone.

An iPod Touch will do much the same.

I don't quite 'get' tablets, but it looks like there are quite a few in all sizes coming down the belt:

Some of the cheaper Android ones are best avoided. The screens are poor resistive touch technology and they often come with Android 1.6.

You can even run Android 1.6 on an x86 based computer - which is what is in some of the cheaper tablets. Some do have Android 2.1 or even 2.2 though but be wary of the ones with crap screens.

Oh and I have an old iPAQ going spare too ;-) I probably should ebay these items.

And the sound can be quite loud. Mine is brilliant.

I know the tablets are flawed but it depends what you want to use it for. Personaly I want them to be crap as I don't want people to replace their laptops with them. I know one of my customers walked out of a well known PC store indisgust after one of their sales people tried to sell him a Galaxy tab instead of a laptop. He needs his laptop to write reports on and he uses specialist software.

PP, I've emailed the address in your profile. It is an old Psion 5 (non MX) that I have. Just powered up and it works. And it's a brick compared to me Android and very slow. Don't forget everyone the Psion 5 was the first to run EPOC32 which morphed into Symbian ;-)

Which again I'd say using a decent (even old phone) as a PDA and phone makes sense. I had (still do) and iPAQ 2200 and used it as my diary etc. (and got it for satnav actually) but then replaced it with a Nokia N70 (got one of those going spare too).
