My 6 year old MESH computer is connected to the internet via a speedtouch usb modem.

I have a Thomson ST585 v6 laying about unused and my question is ...

I have no ethernet socket on my computer, should I buy a usb/ethernet adaptor?

or, is the Network LAN socket on my computer actually an ethernet socket anyway.

Sounds to me that your computer has an RJ45 Ethernet LAN socket already.

Agree.

What's more, if you have an internet connection that could/can deliver higher speeds (ADSL2+), you will get the benefit as USB modems' maximum speed capability is 8Mb.

Did you mean won't get the benefit Stuart? That's how I'd see it.

Could be. I'd assumed it was a modem router, rather than just a router. See:

www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/Specifications.asp?ProductID=2364

So will need to buy a modem router such as:

www.ebuyer.com/product/191509 ...:-)

That Thomson SpeedTouch 585 v6 Wireless-G ADSL 2+ Router is what I have, should I bin it then and buy a Belkin G Wireless ADSL modem router, I didn't pay anything for the Thomson jobbie btw.

Why bin it? The Belkins have a poor reputation for performance. Do you need wireless N? There's no point having N unless your bb connection is faster than your internal network or you want to transfer large quantities of data between 2 pcs on your home network.

The Speedtouch has a Broadcomm chipset which generally hangs onto the bb connection better than most. You can also tweak it with www.kitz.co.uk/routers/DMTv7.htm

It wasn't a recommendation, merely an example at a reasonable price, hence the words: "such as"..:-)

In any case, if you ask nicely, your ISP will probably supply a wireless router free of charge.....

I've had four or five from TalkTalk up to now, along with a D-Link wireless adapter (I took part in one of its test trials in the case of the adapter).

He's got a good one, why should he get another?

What do you do with four or five?
Explains why talktalk charges are going up from January 2011.

No, TalkTalk has always supplied a free USB or modem router (now wireless type) from the time I joined in April 2006, when it launched "free" broadband.

Just keeping pace with other ISPs and BT charges.

My AnyTime International3 broadband and phone package has only gone up by about £1.75 since I took it out in 2006.

Still superb value...:-)

Three contract renewals plus two for test trials (you get to keep them).

The latest is used for the system and the others to family members and friends already with TalkTalk using older models...:-)

That is perfectly fine. No need to buy anything else.

As for ADSL2+/24meg/whatnot, who is your ISP? and Where is your exchange?
Check out Samknows (use your postcode to find your exchange).

Cheers John & John H ... I've only got a cheap plusnet phone + BB package, my exchange is in Truro but I've never investigated how far from my home it actually is.

I'll connect this Speedtouch 585 up over the weekend - I don't use wireless btw.

I shall also check out that Samknows to find my exchange.

If you have any problem with the config give me a shout, I'll notice eventually.

Dog,
described here tinyurl.com/26v3ahe

That's what I use. it's a good bit of kit. Speedtouch is a Thomson brand name.

Just plug the router into the phone socked and your pc into one of the Ethernet / RJ45 / Network LAN (different names, same thing) socket, do a bit of configuring and off you go.
