Mobile Phone Videos Not Playing on Laptop - Golf_Paul

Please can someone help?

It's a very simple problem - videos captured on my mobile phone will not play after I have transferred them to my laptop.

Mobile phone is a Nokia 6300. Computer is an Acer 5732Z running Windows 7.

The video files are of type .3gp, and play fine on the phone (visual and audio). After copying to the laptop, they will not play.

I get the following error message ...

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

Please can anyone tell me what I need to do to get these files to play?

Please keep it simple - just like me!

Thanks.

You need to install a "CODEC" on your windows media player,

Cor! I somehow knew this would not be easy for me.

Thanks for the link, Z. Which do you recommend ...

a) FFDShow MPEG-4 Video Decoder
b) Haali Media Splitter

I think I would only want to play them on my laptop, rather than make them portable.

Sorry to be dense with this :(

FFdshow

Thanks. I'll have a go with that.

Actually I have just installed Realplayer, but the video window is still about the same size as the phone!

I seem to have downloaded and installed FFdshow, but can't see what to do now.

I knew I shouldn't have bothered :(

Thanks for advice, Zero, but I'll keep the phone as I am now out of my depth :(

Those 3gp videos from nokia phones are small anyway. Never really intended to be seen on a large screen PC

Zero, thanks for your comments.

I'll just watch the videos in Realplayer or on the phone for now.

I didn't want to lose them though; it's my granddaughter giving me a near-heart attack seeing how high she can swing in the kids' playground. I don't think I dare go that high when I was only 6!

I know it's a bit late as you've got an existing recording you want to view, but on my Nokia phone you can toggle between .3gp and .mp4 video recording. The latter works in Media Player on the PC.

Is there not a "fullscreen" button on RealPlayer?

I have just checked the camera/video settings, but there is no option for recording format. There is a 'sepia' effect if I want it!

RealPlayer full-screen mode still only shows the video bit in a very small window in the centre.
You can 'drag' the image size, but of course quality is lost.

Thanks for additional hints, Dave.
