I know of a mint condition Bentley w12 flying spur on a 2006 plate in silver with tan hide inside. 65k miles with one owner.
he's been around dealers and its too risky for them I think and the best he's been offered by a dealer is 22k which is huge depreciation from new.

if I could get it for under 25k and run it a year and sell it 20k it should sell easily when I no longer use it or is that wishful thinking , ive seen loads for sale around 35-40k at this age in dealer networks
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - WillDeBeest
We humoured you over the Granada and the Rover, Nyx, but now you're just being silly.
}:---)

Serious point: if the present owner can't get rid of it now at a decent price, what makes you think you'll do any better after another year of fuel price increases? You may have seen loads for sale at higher prices, but how many have you seen sold?
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - rtj70
Got fed up of the XJ already?

I'd think the cost of running the Bentley will be huge. And in 12 months it will be even harder to sell it. I'm not sure I'd buy such a car privately due to the cost of fixing things should there be problems. Probably factored into selling price from traders? Just my thoughts.

Phone 3/4 Bentley specialists and ask how much they would give YOU today if you were selling for cash.............you might find £15K mentioned and some not interested as they have 1 in stock for many months.
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - rtj70
Cheapest on Autotrader is a shade under £30k and is a year older. So I am guessing these are not selling...
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - nyx2k
ive been doing some research and tried 3 bentley dealers 1 up north and 2 in south and no one is buying. it seems such a cheap price for a great car but if im not around it could end up a night mare to get rid of.

im a little bored of the xj. i want a more lively car. love the jaguar but maybe a supersport v8 or similar.

just fancy a big engined v8/v12. my illness has progressed a lot slower than we thought and im still perfectly capable of driving so fancied bowing out in style and not with a nice diesel motor. do BMW do a fire breathing v8 or was it a bit effeminate.

just want a 4door luxury v8 that roars when driven hard. any ides anyone.

my xj is still mint so may look at xj supersport or maybe a smaller xf-r or similar. i bet the diesel xj is selling better than supercharged v8's
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - No FM2R
Are you for real?

"fire breathing v8"?

This is all seeming increasingly unlikely.
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - Armel Coussine
A Vauxhall/Holden Monaro or whatever? The four-door saloon is really the one. Brutal but forgiving and engaging, it is said, and very fast.

One can only sympathise with your wish to enjoy the rest of your life nyx2k. If you can afford the petrol the Bentley could be very pleasant after all. Even Rolls-Royce Bentleys are quite expensive to run and maintain properly, but there's no reason why a Jaguar owner shouldn't contemplate owning a VW one.

All Bentleys and Rollses are a bit flash though, and everyone will imagine you are rich if you drive one. As you will need to be if you drive it for long.
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - madf
Put it on ebay for spares...
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - nyx2k
I don't me a real fire breathing v8 monster but id love something 450-500hp range. i suppose i want a 4door GT car so will go to jaguar and look at there nearly new stuff but cant see being able to get a mint v8 for my xj and a little more cash.
looked at quatroporte's but they are very fragile from what ive seen and need more room anyway

please be assured this is for real. come down to goodwood and have lunch. boys off school so a bit of fishing in the harbour this week i think if anything there. if not a gentle motor around would be nice.
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - nyx2k
I looked at Royce's as we always wanted one but cant find anything that doesn't make me look like a tit. silver seraph is cheapish but not a real Royce and early phantoms look expensive still. even older soft tops looked silly with me in them and some are way too big for the country lanes I use sometimes
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - No FM2R
>>please be assured this is for real

I don't believe you.

However since I don't know for sure, I'll leave you to it.
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - nyx2k
just looked at v8 jaguars and the standard v8 is 385hp which seems plenty. just need a test drive. the supersports are a lot more than id want to spend on a used car.
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - Zero
My money is on a miracle cure.
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - WillDeBeest
What is it that you don't believe, NoFM? Nyx has been with us quite a while and seems real enough - or is constructing a fantasy so elaborate that he's done well not to have tripped himself up on the details before now. Good to hear that he may yet be with us longer than he expected.

V8 saloon says AMG to me. There are loads of E55s and some E63s for barely more than an E220 CDI of the same age, and they're (just) sensible enough to be saleable later on.

Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - PeterS
>> just want a 4door luxury v8 that roars when driven hard. any ides anyone.

If that's really a genuine question from someone who already has a Jaguar XJ then I have a few observations that might help. I spent some time working for a German owned luxury car manufacturer in W Sussex a few years back, and so got to drive some of the car in that class. The Bentley Flying Spur is undoubtedly a capable and quick car, but the W12 is quite refined and though quick I wouldn't say it roared. Not a bad place to be a passenger though. If that's really what you want I think an AMG engined 'E' or 'S' class saloon would be a better bet than a Bentley, and you'd get a much newer one too, as a well as (and its not often you can say this about an AMG engined Merc) lower running costs.

Alternatively one of the supercharged Jaguars would seem to be the logical choice, though the previous shape ones are sub £20k and the current ones still north of £50k on the whole. BMW do offer a V8, with the 550i being the cheapest model its available in. With 400+bhp and 0-60 in 5 seconds its hardly likely to be 'effeminate', though I expect its more refined than roaring in nature!
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - nyx2k
i didn't think of an e class Mercedes.

what i mean is i dont want anything too quiet and want to hear the v8 make that proper noise a v8 should make when pushed but still like a softer ride sometimes so probably an e class merc or the jaguar.
im going to the jaguar dealer Saturday to see what can be worked out.

Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - R.P.
An E90 BMW M3 - That one has a firebreathing V8 - no better way to get around.
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - nyx2k
i like the drive the m3 gives but an m5 is a better size but cant get excited about m5 when i drive them. im not brave enough to throw cars around on the public road so my fix for speed is limited to accelerating hard in straight lines on clear dual carriageways
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - rtj70
What about an RS6 or an RS4?

As you mention M5... a V10 M5 might be fun for a bit. But the newer V8 M5 with turbo is even better.
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - nyx2k
an RS6 may be a good left-field choice.
a friend has an rs4 and it really is very very good.

The Bentley is looking like an attractive deal potentially but if its not quite "you" how about one of these;

www.breeze-volkswagen.co.uk/cars/used/volkswagen-phaeton-2011-petrol-grey-6501

Only perhaps a little older and cheaper if you can find one.

Mind you its got 4 more cylinders than you were looking for.

They made a Phaeton with the 4.2 V8 petrol for a few years but it's the most unloved of a slow selling bunch.

I bet it sounds the best when being booted however.
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - rtj70
The left field choice might be a car you have fun in - does it need to be a V8 barge? What about a Mazda MX-5 even (I'll get my coat!) or a FIAT 500 Abarth Essesse. Or a Mini of some sort. All easily resold afterwards.

But a V10 Audi RS6 must be fun... although an older one would also be fun.

I have oggled these in the past. As usual - poor adverts.
They all have four doors! Most have five seats and some have just four seats.
Been in production for quite a while but I still like them.
They used to do V8 petrol and 5L V10 diesels

I had one (a Phaeton, that is). Without a shadow of a doubt, the best saloon car I've ever owned in any country ever.

But I wouldn't own one without the manufacturer's warranty. Under warranty once I had a dripping pipe on the power steering replaced. They asked me if I would like to pay for the other side to be replaced as well. When I asked why they pointed out that the part was either £14 or £28, I forget, and the labour was £1400. I paid the £14 or whatever it was.

Mind you, stunning car, stunning service from VW, stunning thing to drive. And in my opinion looked great.

>stunning service from VW,

They don't require (and cover the cost of) new pipes and couplings when a £1400 steering job is done?

That's truly stunning.
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - No FM2R
Why? It was another part of the car which appeared to be perfect, and they offered to replace it for me. Seemed good service to me.

What would you have expected? Other parts of the car in seemingly good order replaced for free? Where have you had that service?

I was impressed to be asked.

Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - Kevin
>Why? It was another part of the car which appeared to be perfect, and they offered to replace it for me.

If it was perfect why would they want to replace it?
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - No FM2R
Why are you so bothered that I liked the VW service?
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - rtj70
>> If it was perfect why would they want to replace it?

Because the work to replace the pipe(s) was £1400... so the offer to replace the okay pipe for a low cost was fair in my opinion. They wouldn't replace both because who'd pay for the £14/28 of the other pipe? I think it was good service too.
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - Bromptonaut

>> If it was perfect why would they want to replace it?

FFS. Part A has failed. It's not costly but is an expensive faff to fit. While car is in bits do you want us to do a precautionary replacement of part B, it's mirror image.

I'd say yes, but OTOH if they're doing a £1400 warranty job and a mirror image part might be suspect would expect mfr to cover himself by replacing both.
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - Kevin

FFS, you've never worked in engineering have you?

You don't skimp a £1400 warranty job by re-using hydraulic fittings that cost £14.
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - No FM2R

Oh don't be so ridiculous. I've run engineering companies with a 1000 engineers in it, and every one of them would have understood my note.

Phaeton is a superb idea.

i think Phaeton, new shape xj, even an a8. i love my xj but want a bit of shove when i want it to. i dont want what may be my last car to be a bit boring. a nice 400hp v8 would be perfect.

Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - rtj70
I'd assumed your XJ was the current/new shape... oh get rid of that old styled thing and get something else ;-) It's a bit dated.

The way you're buying and selling it won't be your last car. But the Phaeton is meant to be a very well made car. The Bentley of course reused most/a lot of that. But VW shouldered development costs.

If I went for the Phaeton I'd be tempted by the V10 diesel.

For some reason I'd assumed the OP was looking for a newish car, but you're right, the E39 and E60 5 series were available with a V8 engine as well. Again not that much of a roar though, more of a refined rumble to its engine note and 'only' 300 or so bhp
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - Avant
The idea of a Bentley is fun, but might it not in reality be just too smooth and quiet - rather like the Jaguar?

It might be an idea to keep the Jaguar for everyday and get some classic old V8 that makes a real V8 noise: a Triumph Stag, a Rover 3500, even a 1950 Ford Pilot....

ebay number 221005302609 or similar any good?

A bit brash, but that 6.1 should have enough oomph and thunderous sound for you, lots of 5.7's available but many seem to have been upgraded (wheels usually) by pimps or drug dealers.

Alternatively, consider MB's C or E class 55/63 offerings?

yes my jaguar is a new shape one. 2.5yrs old i think. still in mint condition so would want a good px for a diesel over a big petrol but willing to put in another 10k ish.
jaguar are picking me up so i can drive a v8 portfolio. the local dealer have been most helpful when i bought the jaguar
were more than willing to send someone with a car i could drive all day if wanted to get a feel of it.

cts or hemi is a thought. and cheap but cts engine a bit lacking in cylinders. a v8 makes a great sound.

Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - -
CTS V is very rare but would feed the V8 sound needs.

Lexus ISF?

It's not the price of the thing that's a problem to look at, it's the thing itself. Yes, you don't have to look at the outside when you're driving it, but the interior is even worse.

I suspect Cadillac has a sort of reverse-halo effect on Opel and Vauxhall. European customers, consciously or otherwise, look to see what's the best GM can do and think, ah - perhaps we'll have a Volkswagen instead.

A Volkswagen comparing with a Bentley or Rolls?I go for the Bentley the name alone is inpressive.
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - rtj70
The Phaeton and Bentley Continentals are very closely related... The body of the Bentley is made in Germany and shipped to Crewe. In fact some Bentley's are assembled in Germany - the lorries bringing the bodies used to go back empty but now they take parts made in the UK (e.g. the seats).

Nick,

I transport cars like these every week - it's not the same as driving them very far I know, but being around them it's possible to compare noise and "shove", as well as accommodation and looks. The Bentley W12 is a lovely car in "standard" trim, but they are *so* refined that the 500bhp shove is almost sanitised in its delivery - it's not out-and-out sporty if that's what you're looking for.

I don't know if it's possible to retrofit the "Speed" package to an 06 Flying Spur for reasonable money, but the other week I was sitting outside a Bentley dealer waiting for a salesman to come and open it up out of hours. He was driving a Conti GT Speed which was audible from ½ mile away and sounded like a NASCAR racer. That would do you :)

Otherwise I have to agree with WDB, AMG-engined Mercs are the best 4-doors inducing a grin when you boot them with the windows down. Don't touch anything Italian.

For some reason nyx2k has ignored my suggestion of the Vauxhall/Holden V8 of which I have never seen an unfavourable review or road test. It ticks all the snorting-monster boxes, is reasonably priced and has a reputation for toughness and reliability as well as macho but genial road comportment.

I'd have one like a shot if I could support it, although the Phaeton V10 diesel looks tempting too.

Here's a W211 AMG: www.normanmotors.co.uk/index.php?content=details&category=Mercedes-Benz&car=2629

Actually, I'm generally immune to AMGs but I really fancy this one. The dark blue paint and light interior are nicely understated - the C63 crowd seem to like theirs in white with black wheels, which looks (a) macho-sad and (b) unfinished - and I expect the brown dash top and steering wheel look nicer in reality.
Bentley Flying Spur - anyone own one please - Dutchie
Nice car for the price.I was lucky to drive a few Mercs as test cars in my spare time in the past.

>> the Vauxhall/Holden V8

The Vauxhall VXR8 in this country, Holden CSV in its native land.

I mentioned in "Unusual sightings" a while back of following a grey CSV registered "AU51 UFO" which certainly ticked the noise box. Good call AC, and likely to have done much of its initial depreciating by now I would have thought.

Thank goodness someone is aware.

There's a black Vauxhall one that lives close to a good friend of mine a couple of blocks from Paddington station. It's a bit garish looking with the spoilers, chrome bits and exhaust pipes, but could easily be toned down cosmetically to be fairly invisible to all but the discerning.

I think though I have seen a bland Monaro two-door coupe fitted with the V8, quite a discreet looking thing it is. But perhaps I am mistaken.

i had a Jaguar XJ 5.0 v8 prem lux on an 11 plate for 3hours yesterday.
I think i'm nearly sold on a nearly new jag v8 on the new shape car.

when i bought the current car a few months ago i bought it because i promised myself a nice luxury car and it has been except the deisel was a common sense choice too far but luckily my deisel jag is popular with 85percent selling at mo with deisel engine so a nice v8 is doable

i have a choice of colours etc if i want to search nationally or get a black on black prem lux version or a lovely black with browns and creams interior but is 3k more for the portfolio.

ive been offered 31k for mine and they want 43 for the portfolio which is 14months newer than mne. havent done any real haggling because had to get back home early yesterday.

BUT... I have a friend who's brother has a Holden V8 that he's showing off later so will try a drive.

Mercedes in Chi are dreadful and only had one c63 and no s class or fast e class's at all.
will try portsmouth for merc Monday.

What would you do re price on petrol jag. i have a bit of a hang up spending more than another 10k extra for the newer car.

Thought you wanted a bit more involvement, something a bit brutal almost.

Can see the offered Jaguar being anything other than refined and very fast but clean efficient and clinical same as you'd get in a big Lexus, its not going to sound like a German American or Australian over the top muscle car unless you get someone to sort the exhaust out.

Might it be equally same as the Diesel version in short order.

Funds wise, and this is none of my business and simply a suggestion....

You know roughly how much your present motoring is costing, and how much will be involved if you plump for the Jag you tested.

Might there be a case for having a series of slightly cheaper toys instead probably costing a similar amout overall...maybe something all wheel drive for the winter such as a flying Subaru Forester or early RR V8 Diesel (that engine has an addictive growl), then a Monaro come the spring and so on and work through maybe half a dozen as whim takes you.

You might find something you really enjoy but even if you buy and sell several times the overall costs will probably be no more than the Jags will and the fun experiences maybe better....cars around £15 to 25k maybe easier to shift on without painful losses that £40kers.

Incidentally should you end up with a fast MB of some sort, there is a highly competent indy at Southampton who's work is sung about on the MB forum i visit, a good specialist indy is a must for MBs.
Bentley Flying Spur - jaguar update - nyx2k
I'll call into mb dealer in chi Monday and spend a bit more time getting them to check stock in group and go from there.

the only reason I didn't sign for the jag is as said above. super car but only the engine is different and it does make a growl when pushed but doesn't sound like 400hp. feels like 400hp though. i think mine is 300hp ish so a real difference.

maybe i could ask about exhaust changes recommended by jaguar for a little extra growl.

E63 looks lovely. is the e class the same size as an xj as my current long is lwb but v8s ive seen are only swb models and my parents and friends love the extra leg room as do i if im not driving but suppose they can get stock anywhere in the country but i would get a better deal if i bought something from the dealer in their stock.

i was thinking of getting an xk-r as some seem good value at 1yr old but ruled out on extra 40k so wanted comfort, luxury and speed with a little edge to it but not sure what the missing x factor is.

maybe will look at lexus but i think maybe too quiet on the engine front but never driven a new one so may be worth a try.

my mind comes back to that lovely merc amg engine though.

would that mb specialist be better placed to check over a car before i purchase do you think?
a second opinion would be good from a respected source.

the reason i have one car and my wife has one is because with have on street parking. no garage. lovely village but no room.
my health situation means sometime soon?? i'll no longer be able to drive and then the condition means i was given 12-months ish about 9 months ago but if slower progress in the tumour means i get longer is any ones guess, so wanted a car like the jag and the jag was the car i wanted but i bought the wrong engine. havent a clue what to do so will wait for the family to get home tonight and get the wife to interprep my ramblings and give me an idea of what i really want.

if i was to buy something competely left field it might be too hard for her to sell and i dont want the pressure of having her to lose 30-40k and feeling bad about it.

''if i was to buy something competely left field it might be too hard for her to sell and i dont want the pressure of having her to lose 30-40k and feeling bad about it.''

Thats why i suggested maybe getting something in the 15 to 25k bracket if possible and owning two or three different types over time, desirable big boys toys in this price range far easier to sell on that at 35 to 40k in my opinion.

I don't think anyone is suggesting really left field like Italian supercars or TVR's, out and out sports cars probably costing umpteen thousands any and every dealer visit even if its not broken.

AC's Monara suggestion is a good one IMO and typical of what should be looked for, a solid well respected muscle car of the old school, it will never be out of fashion because it was never in fashion, cars like this will always sell to enthusiastic drivers whilst they are legal to own, same as Mustangs and the like.

Incidentally we test drove a 12 month old Mustang V8 on a 55 plate (importers demo), available at about £16k at the time around that age used...keeping an eye on prices it would appear those cars of that year manufacture have only lost about 2 to 3k if any (poosibly aided by still being £250 VED if 55 or earlier)...maybe things like Mustangs/Monaros and the like come into a sort of timeless category and will always be wanted by drivers who think ouside the box?

thanks for the link.
will get some reading done in there. i really still fancy a Bentley as so cheap. the Arnage is ridiculously cheap but I suppose huge running costs, will check the sums.

Now if one was willing to risk losing some money, an old pre-VW Bentley appeals to me to. But I'm not going to take the risk. Saving for quitting work young and enjoying life.

luckily we have been saving hard since i statarted earning god money thats why the house and toys are all paid for. as for the enjoying bit, i was hoping for another 40yrs but it doesnt look very likely so i try to enjoy now.

You are an example of why we all need to try to enjoy life now. And you're doing a good job of it I think. I hope you find the next fun car that you enjoy. I think an older V8 Bentley would be more enjoyable than a Continental GT.

Who knows what might happen next week. Our outlook changed when we survived a bad car accident in 2006. Although we've talked about quitting the UK before then. It's all a matter of money to do it. Part of why we downsized to a 3 bed house a few years back to get rid of a mortgage.

ive been looking at arnages red labels on piston heads etc and its so tempting.
25k buys a perfect warranted car with the proper engine in it or even the arnage t but need to do more research today.

a friend has the green label but a bit refined with that BMW engine in it.
can get a really good deal on a jaguar.
Actually my wife went down to speak to them as i was feeling tired and dozed off. she managed to better the deal they offered me by 3k so for my jag d and 9k i can have a newer v8 5l. very tempting but after reading owners accounts of running these bentleys i think it may be doable. my brother has offered to buy my jag with 1/2 now and half January so could buy something without having to offer px and can can look at cheaper cars aswell.
