Problem with TomTom 825 Live and Memory Card - Meldrew
I have just got a new TomTom 825 and it works well. I have bought an 8GB mini SD card with an adaptor to make it "Normal" size when put in a card reader.

I put it in my computer and copied about 6Mb of images from my laptop onto the card, to use on the TT. I put it into the TT and got a message saying "Must be formatted for use in TT". I did that which deleted the images, obviously. When I put it back to the laptop it showed as Capacity 8Gb and available NIL. The pie chart in Properties showed all Blue = All used so nothing could be transferred to it

Additionally, when the device is connected to the computer it automatically downloads available updates but does not show on "My Computer" as an external drive so I can't copy the contents as a back-up and the operating system does not even provide for a back up which TT say they are working on - rather shabby for something which has been on sale for 12 month IMO.

Access it through the tom-tom & USB cable, not by using it in the PC card reader.

Zero he says it doesn't appear as an external drive. I find that odd and something is clearly wrong. Maybe a forum specialising in helping with sat nav is better for this like pocketgpsworld.com?

so he did, I only saw half the post

Right I wonder if his card reader in the pc can cope with SDHC, some can't. Being 8gig it will be SDHC

When he says device I took it to mean the TomTom 825 with the memory card in it.

Having said that I believe my old TomTom 720 could read larger cards but not write to them. But with this being a TT 825 it should cope with SDHC surely?

How old is the firmware on the 825 - does it support the use of the memory card slot? I ask because the 820 needed a firmware update. Probably not this but we can all google for you. Ask it somewhere where there are other users of a TT 825 :-)

But wasn't the Navcore software updated to support the SD card slot in these?

You need to be on Navcore 11.030 or 11.031 to support use of the SD card slot.

Also TomTom has stopped supporting FAT32 so the card won't work in a PC or mount on Windows as a filesystem. Is there not a facility in myTomTom software (not TomTom Home) to copy to a memory card? In fact it might not be available to you to use as you see fit - the TomTom will use the extra memory card if needed for maps etc.

That is true is going to stop people buying TomToms. Not that I use it much these days but my TomTom 720 could stream music to the radio via the inbuilt tuner. And could control/use and iPod.... So it looks like you cannot so easily take out the memory card and drop on music anymore?

Is this information on their support site incorrect then?

"When you buy a new memory card, you don't need to format the card before installing your maps. New memory cards are formatted to FAT 32, which is the correct format for use with navigation devices."

Lancara I think that is correct but as one buys the maps from TomTom and downloads them on line they go from TT onto the card on the device. I am trying to transfer info from my dead 720 SD card onto a mini card (which is recognized by the the 825)

Card reader is recognised by my laptop and the 825 but info put on in FAT 32 format from the laptop isn't accepted by the 825 and the card formatted for TT is "Full" when looked at on the laptop.

A call to support on Monday I think! I think it odd that TT is not recognised as an External drive so I shall query that too. I am frankly amazed that the thing is on sale with a back up capability! Any computer type device should be capable of back up IMO!

So... what you trying? A Slideshow?

My TomTom (Toyota II) has a menu item "photoviewer/document reader", but there is no reference on how to use them in the manual, and queries on the TomTom forum have not been answered. (Thought it might be used as a mini-tablet for reviewing photos in the field)

As there is 7.75 Gb free on the card I was experimenting with a few start up images of about 7Mb total - plenty of space plus seeing if it was possible

It would be interesting to put the TomTom formatted card in a Linux or Mac system. I would imagine it is now ext3 or something and not FAT32. They fell out with Microsoft and I don't think they use FAT32 anymore. Hence the issues Meldrew is having.

I think you will have to use the TomTom software (myTomTom?) to transfer files.

If you download Tom Tom Home Meldrew you can register the new unit there and then can back up everything on it to your PC.

Have you tried this way?

Pat

I think the software for the new TomTom's is MyTomTom and not home. Home would support a FAT32 formatted unit - they don't use FAT32 anymore.

Thanks Pat as rjt70 said, the new software interface is not TomTom Home but a new one called My TomTom. I am perplexed by the fact that the computer connects with the device and obtains updates but is not recognised as an external drive which can be used, like my external back up drive does. I shall ring the helpline next week.

All this justifies my decision to buy the old technology tomtom a month or two back.

Do you want my RDS traffic lead Zero?

Alas Melders, my new "old style" - classic - tom-tom does not have the socket for your style of RDS lead, it takes the type that uses the USB socket. But thanks for the offer.
