The lighter colour of the route shows it descended to 10,000ft to become more visibale and keep out of the way of usual air traffic over the eastern Med. Reply to this message | Report message

The pity is that, other than on a radar trace, I don't suppose anyone actually saw the image. I doubt that the aircraft would have left a vapour trail in the shape of a B747, especially as the shape was about 125 miles long. Reply to this message | Report message

Manoeuvring was around 10,000 feet so unlikely to trail anyway. FR24 records suggest LY1747 was a one off flight number. Aircraft positioned to Rome on 31/10 and returned yesterday. Possibly empty or may have been a 'farewell' flight for the 747 fleet with enthusiasts and/or El Al staff aboard. . South African Airways bought 747s before the end of apatheid for the same reason mentioned in that article. They were not allowed into other African country's airspace so on routes to and from Europe they would fly off the Atlantic coast and refuel in Las Palmas. I flew to Jo'burg on one of their first 747SPs in 1977. They were still using them until the early noughties or so when I was allowed to watch a landing from the cockpit jumpseat.
