I'd suggest they're some sort of active roll protection that are triggered on impact.

Should have bought a new model Porsche Targa anyway. The most compromised of the current crop of 911s ( so I’ve read) but I wouldn’t crawl over one to get into Italian exotica.

Yes, anti roll protection. My A4 convertible (I miss the 3.2 v6) had them. They were triggered when someone t-boned me.
