Edit dunno what got bleeped there. - Essentially I said dont try and scold or correct a dog out of bad recall, you can never get the time and place right.

SO, you need to work on positive recall. Start at short distances in a safe space, like your garden. If he is out there, to 5 yards away from him, call his name, give him a treat. Do that again and again in various locations, increasing distance, but EVERY time he must get a treat, if you dont have any, dont try it you would only set yourself up to fail.

There is one reason and one reason only a dog wont recall, and thats because what its doing is more interesting or rewarding than you. My older dog we recall from prey drive - ie chasing a rabbit, I can call her off the chase. The pup? at 4 months the recall is pretty good, not prey drive good - yet.

you dont need a device, a word will do, say "click" or "good". Say the word, treat the dog, and it soon relates word to treat, its basic Pavlovs dog.

Never be afraid to have a dog on the low end of the scale. as low on the breed percentile as you can keep it. Your dog will thank you for it in later years, far less chance of the back end collapsing later.

If your dog is not food or treat driven when training the reward can be a tuggy, or toy.
