Women have been going to see the men's conveniences

The owners of a Lancashire garden centre have spent thousands of pounds so that customers can spend a penny.

Barton Grange Garden Centre at Brock claim to the first business in the UK to install designer floral urinals in the men's toilets.

American artist Clark Sorensen designs the conveniences as elaborate flowers.

Guy Topping, centre managing director, said: "My grandma always used to say you can judge a place by its toilets, so it was worth the extra investment."

The garden centre was officially opened by the Princess Royal last month, and Mr Sorensen travelled from his San Francisco home to be at the opening.

His urinal designs, which cost upwards of $6,500 (£3,250), include daffodils, poppies, lilies and tulips.

Good feedback

Mr Topping said: "When we were building this place, we were determined to make our toilets as special as the rest of the garden centre.

"My wife Carol found the urinals on the internet and they were ideal for us - very different and floral too so perfect for our business."

The centre is now selling a postcard for those who have used the toilets boasting "I've watered the flowers at Barton Grange garden centre".

Mr Topping said customers had given good feedback on the unusual features.

"They love them," he said.

"In fact, our only complaint in the first few weeks of opening was that the men couldn't get into the gents' because it was full of ladies looking at the urinals!"
