Fire crews used specialist cutting equipment to rescue the pair, both in their 60s, before they were treated by paramedics at the scene on New Year's Day.

Incredibly, the male driver of the classic car escaped with just injuries to his fingers and was taken to Hereford County Hospital.

The female driver of the Skoda Yeti also required hospital treatment after complaining of leg, back and neck pain after the collision, which took place on the A449 in the picturesque village of Much Marcle, near Ledbury.

Witnesses to the crash said the male driver of the car had been more concerned about the damage to his prized motor.

One onlooker, who did not wish to be named, said: "He looked devastated. It was obviously his pride and joy.

"The main thing was that they weren't more seriously injured though - it looked like a nasty smash."

West Midlands Ambulance Service said the pair were "fortunate to escape serious injury".

A spokesman said an ambulance, a paramedic in a rapid response vehicle, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance attended.

He added: "Crews responded to a road traffic collision following reports of a two-vehicle collision involving a vintage car.

"One vehicle was found on top of the vintage car, trapping the driver and passenger.

"Both the driver and passenger were fortunate to escape serious injury. The driver, a man believed to be in his sixties, was treated for a hand injury.

"A woman passenger, also believed to be in her sixties, was treated for leg, back and neck pain.

"Both patients were taken to Hereford County Hospital for further assessment and treatment."

Two fire crews from Ledbury and Fownhope attended the crash, working to stabilise the vehicles and make the road safe.

A spokesman for Herefordshrie Fire and Rescue added: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision in Much Marcle at around 11.30am.

"Two fire engines attended the scene to find one car on top of the other.

"We used stabalising and rescue cutting equipment to extricate the casualties from the vehicles and they were treated at the scene.

"One female suffered lower limb injuries and a male casualty had injuries to his fingers."

Dave Throup, of the Environment Agency, tweeted a picture of the crash and said: "Bet this took some explaining."

Jim Hancox, of West Midlands Ambulance Service, also posted on the social network site, adding: "Breaks your heart to see a beautiful car like this damaged – main thing however is that the occupants were fine."
