More than 1,000 frozen chickens were left on the M5 after the van carrying them crashed near Bristol.

Avon and Somerset Police said they were called after the delivery van crashed on to its side between junctions 19 and 20 of the motorway at about 11:40 BST.

The driver was treated for minor injuries after being freed from the vehicle.

The Highways Agency helped to clear the chickens from the road, which was reopened at 12.20 BST.

A spokesman for the Great Western Ambulance Service said the driver, a male in his 20s, was taken to Weston General Hospital.

He was treated for minor injuries.
