Oxford 20mph speed limit crackdown stops 83 drivers

More than 80 drivers were stopped in the space of two hours during a crackdown on motorists flouting a 20mph limit in Oxford.

Thames Valley Police announced in August it would begin enforcing 20mph zones introduced on roads across the city two years ago.

Officers stopped 83 drivers in St Giles in the city centre between 08:00 and 10:00 BST on Friday.

Police said they were "disappointed" at the number of speeding motorists.

One of those stopped is to be summonsed to court for travelling at 41mph, more than twice the limit.

The force said 18 drivers caught travelling between 32mph and 39mph were given fines of £60 and points on their licence, while 61 drivers caught travelling at 31mph or less were given roadside advice.

Two people were fined for not wearing seatbelts, while another car was searched for cannabis - none was found.

PC Mark Pilling said the check was carried out after concerns were raised by people living in the area.
