Somerset floods: Submerged Seat Toledo on sale on eBay

A submerged car that was returned to its owner after weeks stuck under water on the flooded Somerset Levels is to be sold to raise money for flood victims.

Hubert Zajaczkowski was reunited with his silver Seat Toledo last week - having had to abandon it on a road near Muchelney on Christmas Eve.

It became a familiar sight during media coverage of the weeks of flooding.

The 21-year-old has now decided to sell the car on eBay with profits donated to charity helping victims on the Levels.

The 15-year-old 1.8 litre saloon, which Mr Zajaczkowski, from Shepton Mallet, had bought for £600, had remained submerged under several feet of water for more than two-and-a-half months. But when the flood levels receded he was able to reclaim his car last week.

It was towed away by an amphibious vehicle from the site where it had been stuck for 11 weeks and Mr Zajaczkowski was able to reclaim his keys and insurance documents - which he said were covered in grass - from inside the car.

The Seat had been filmed and photographed by national and international media while stuck in the water and had been commented on by Prince Charles and Prime Minister David Cameron.

Mr Zajaczkowski, an apprentice at AgustaWestland in Yeovil, said: "It was shocking, seeing my car on telly and in the international news. Everyone was talking about it, including the Prince of Wales."

Its weeks under water have left the car not working and, according to its owner, smelling "unbelievably disgusting".

He has decided to sell the car, which has 110,000 miles on the clock, on eBay with the profits donated to a charity helping flood victims on the Levels.

In the sale description, Mr Zajaczkowski has written: "Genuine Seat Toledo from the floods in Somerset.

"Obviously NOT in working condition, but my aim is to sell the car and donate the money to a charity which is helping with the floods.

"Any questions please message me. Collection only."

He points out features of the car include climate control and an immobiliser.

The auction is due to end on Wednesday and the highest bid so far is more than £200.

When he got his car back last week Mr Zajaczkowski said he bought it two years ago for £600 and had been hoping to get rid of it in the spring.

"As you can see, nature did it for me," he said.
