Woking A320 collapses after Veolia water mains burst

Part of a main road has collapsed in Surrey leaving a car submerged in water after a mains pipe burst.

Surrey Police said reports of flooding on the A320 Chertsey Road, Woking, were received just after 05:30 BST.

Police said the road had been closed and repairs could take up to four days. Drivers have been advised to allow extra journey time.

One car, a Vauxhall Meriva, ended up stuck after part of the road collapsed. Water firm Veolia has apologised.

Police said the flooding was near the McLaren headquarters in the town.

The A320 is closed between the McLaren's roundabout at Martyrs Lane and the Six Crossroads.

BBC Travel news reported queuing traffic during the rush hour after the road was closed in both directions.

It said a large stretch of the road had been closed but local residents and businesses still had some access.

A spokeswoman for Veolia Water UK said: "We would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused by a burst 12in water main in Chertsey Road, Woking.

"There will be temporary traffic lights in place while we carry out the repair."

She said there would be further updates on repairs throughout the day.
