I went out and bought standard Sky + with the 'Sports' add on, but not the HD. I can watch the BBC and Channel 4 HD channels, but not the Sky HD ones, my question is, will I be able to watch the F1 channel?

408 is not the HD channel, 409 is. I can view 408 now, but I do not have any sports or HD packages.

Sky teasing us at the moment?

On my HD box 408 is Sky Sports F1 and 459 is Sky SportsF1 HD. I have the full Sports package.

The way Sky have set it up is that if you have SS 1 and 2, you get F1. If you have the HD pack, you get it. You only need to have one of the two. Obviously it's included in the Sky World package.

It's also available on Virgin, definitely, and BT, iirc.

Bizarre, might try a reboot later and see if they swap around.

In Germany its free to air. If you had a second LNB fitted to your dish, it may be possible to view that with the appropriate box.

If you have HD package the numbers for normal/hd channels are different

SKY are claiming coverage will be broadcast in 5.1 surround sound as well, so.........

Will this come through my HDMi lead to the Yamaha amp I have or do I still need to set up the optical cable and allocate sound and vision inputs accordingly ?????

HDMI carries digital audio too, so your Yamaha should be able to decode it.

When you have the HD pack the box swaps the channel numbers so F1 HD becomes 408. Without HD 408 is F1 SD.

Afaik HDMI only carries DD5.1 on the very latest Multi room HD box. For all others you still need an optical connection to,your amp.

I believe hdmi carries only pcm stereo so you'll still need the optical for 5.1.
