Wiper Blade Replacement

How often do you replace your wiper blades  It seems I’m replacing mine every 6 months :astonished:

Once in the last 6 years. But it’s mainly garaged and mostly used in fair weather!

That said I have probably only put 3 sets on our 2014 car since new, and 2 on the 2016 one, both of those live outside and are used year-round.

Usually at 3 years, I use Bosch Aero on all the cars, find they wipe really well.

I drive all year round and put Bosch blades on … They just don’t seem to last :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Had that issue on a few cars.
Some screens are soft and seem to hold contamination from the road.
Was advised to clay bar the windscreen then give it a good treatment with isopropanol ( IPA )
I also now use a hydrophobic coating - the rain mostly seems to run off the glass now.
Wipers now seem to last a few years.

People who live under the flight path of Heathrow get through them quickly, apparently; the unburnt jet fuel rots the rubber.

Agreed.

I use Rain-X on both cars. It also helps a tiny bit to lubricate the blades, no squeak or judder.

The OE Mazda3 blades lasted five years, (only 16K miles) cleaning well until suddenly they began to split (frost?). The Bosch replacements still seem good after another three years. It does not do a high mileage.

I put Bosch blades on Niseko when I bought it, and new ones only a few months before I wrote it off nine years and 17K miles later. But being garaged there was very little rain use, or salt or UV damage to those blades.

But my old Astra needed new Halfords blades every 25-35K, commuting 20K+ a year around the M25, mostly at near 75. The next pair were always waiting in the boot. However, no Rain-X.

Mostly Kerosene!
But the additives are also horrible, the Wiki entry I’ve linked to might persuade us never to use airport parking if we want our car’s paint to last.

Agreed, I use Bosch Aero Blades and replace them annually
What sort of mileage are you doing?

Replace them when they don’t perform very well.
Daily driver, replaced once in 35k miles, NC not yet in around 12k miles, 3 years.

You will eat through wipers in no time if you use them on an icy/frosty screen. Always fully defrost the screen before using the wipers. A good screen wash additive helps and as mentioned above a hydrophobic coating. It’s also worth cleaning the blades regularly to remove any build-up of contamination. I use Sainsbury window cleaner for this!
I will be buying Bosch replacement wipers for my car when I need them but it is still on the original blades after 5 years and 15,000 miles (it is garaged though).

I’m doing over 20k a year

With the rubbish weather and the miles you are covering, then I think it’s negligible in motoring terms.
I do 4k miles a year and change every 3 years, as they seem to lose their flexibility.

The original ND wipers are Denso hybrid type, 18" & 19" (or at least they are a perfect match). Eurocarparts/Carparts4less sell them. They don’t come up in the make and model search unless you filter on the Delco brand. They are in stock I have just ordered some. When last I replaced them I couldn’t find them and bought Michelin Stealth which are a bit bulkier.

Bosch does make a hybrid type but I have never been able to find them. Not to say that the other types don’t work perfectly well, but I like the appearance and function of the hybrid sort.

That might be your issue, granted 6 months is a bit soon…
I think I replace mine annually doing similar mileage

They just don’t seem to clear the windscreen efficiently … I hate driving with smears in the rain

I 100% agree, I am sure it has been discussed on here before somewhere that the Bosch wipers don’t seem to be as good as they used to be
I think it might be worth trying another manufacturer and seeing how you get on with them

That’s a good idea … I used the Bosch Aero ones with no sprung back … Maybe it’s time to try something new

I valet cars for a living. I often find a lot of tar spots on rear windows which makes them rough. This can cause excessive wear on the wipers. But mainly, blade life can be extended by keeping them clean. Both sides of each blade.

I was about to make a comment along those lines!
Give the windscreen a good wash/scrub to try and remove and possible imperfections that are on the glass and could be eating away at the wiper blades every time you use them
