1. About the study

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has had a major impact across the UK.

In April 2020, the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Infection Survey was commissioned to discover how many people in private households:

  • had COVID-19, with or without symptoms
  • had previously caught COVID-19, with or without symptoms
  • had a strong response to a COVID-19 vaccination

We did this by asking questions, taking nose and throat swabs, and for some participants, taking a blood sample.

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) Infection Survey (CIS) has now closed. Survey data collection was paused in March 2023, and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has since confirmed that CIS data collection will not restart.
