An “irresponsible” hit-and-run mobility scooter rider allegedly ran over an unsuspecting toddler, risking causing her serious harm.

Cerryn Smith, aged two, was said to have been knocked to the floor and trapped underneath the scooter before her nan pulled her free, only for the driver to ride off.

The disturbing alleged incident happened at around 11.45am on Friday morning in Ankerside Shopping Centre.

Cerryn was being looked after by her grandma Cath Pulley while her mum Hannah Smith was at work.

She had been so well behaved that Cath promised to take her to H. Samuel to buy her some Peppa Pig earrings before she was hit by the scooter right outside the shop.

Cath, from Coton Green, explained: “We had been to the playground and I said that on our way back we would go to H.Samuel for her.

“She was walking nicely at the side of me and I started to turn the pushchair to go into the shop when this scooter came between me and the shop.

“He knocked her down to the floor and she was wedged between the pushchair and the scooter. I was panicking so I shouted at him and she was screaming her head off.

“He drove off and never even said sorry. At the time I wasn’t interested in him. I was more concerned with checking that Cerryn was ok.

“I am not worried about the what ifs because thankfully they didn’t happen but please realise that Ankerside is a pedestrian through way.

“If you are driving remember that you do not have right of way, especially if there is a little girl around.”

Mum Hannah, who is considering getting the police involved, fumed: “The fact that he was allowed to drive so erratically through a pedestrian area is beyond me. He almost hit three other people as well.

“My dad has a mobility scooter. It is not like I am against them. But this man was driving so fast. He was irresponsible and reckless. All it needed was a bit of consideration.

“This may sound trivial and even funny, but if Cerryn’s grandmother had not acted quickly and pulled her from under the wheels, he could have seriously injured her not to mention he drove off.

“Cerryn is fine now but she is very shaken and upset as was her nan.”

The alleged incident has not been reported to the police.
