TV historian Dan Snow has spoken of his concern for his dad who is self-isolating due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Peter, 80, has been staying at home with his wife Ann after their son asked them to.

Dan said: "My dad's got bad lungs, he's in his 80s, he's just absolutely, you know, straight in the crosshairs.

"You know, why not isolate if I can keep him alive till hopefully some drugs change, situation changes, we can flatten the curve, ventilators will be available in hospitals.

"Whatever it might be I thought, 'why not?'"

The government has told everyone aged 70 or over to self-isolate for 12 weeks as the age group is considered one of the most at risk of contracting Covid-19.

Peter told Channel 4 Dispatches : "We jumped the gun and we started self-isolating about a week ahead of time.

"So here we are, we're enjoying it, aren't we?"

His wife Ann said: "My big thing is we are being very positive - at least I am, and I am saying 'this is it, we're awake today, we're alive, it's spring, there are flowers coming out in the garden, we can come and do gardening in a minute.

"We're reading a lot, we're chatting a lot, Dan and his children do Facetime with us, so that's really important."

She added: "I don't think I am at particular risk, but if I caught it and then gave it to Peter I would never forgive myself."

The 41-year-old historian said he is "very worried", which is why he has asked his parents to remain in isolation.

He explained he brought his mum and dad some pasta and, when his dad thanked him, he felt like there was no need to be told 'thank you'.

He said: "He kept me alive for 18 years.

"So I'm going to get him through the next six months."

As of today, the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the UK is 5,018 - with 233 deaths reported.
