Winter Solstice 2020: Brits gather on Glastonbury Tor to watch the sunset ahead of shortest day of year

PEOPLE gathered on Glastonbury Tor yesterday to watch the sunset ahead of the winter solstice.

Today marks the day of the year with the least amount of light — less than eight hours.

It is an important event to Pagans as it welcomes a new sun.

Glastonbury Tor, rising to 518ft above the Somerset Levels, is also of significance to Christians.

Legends claim that Jesus visited Glastonbury as a boy with Joseph.

Beneath the tor, there is said to be a gateway to the fairy world of Annwn.

Few in the crowd appeared to be wearing masks or maintaining social distancing.

Millions of Brits were plunged into harsh Tier 4 Covid measures on Saturday as PM Boris Johnson battled to halt a rampant strain of coronavirus.
