Moments later, however, an unmarked police car gives the Mercedes driver immediate comeuppance, foiling his plans to speed past the standstill traffic.

The footage, shot on the M40 near High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, was filmed by a bemused motorist who can be heard cackling with laughter as the Mercedes driver is caught seconds after turning his hazard lights on.

The unmarked police car launches into action, turning its flashing lights on as it pursues the vehicle.

At this point the footage speeds up, and the Mercedes driver can be seen parked on the hard shoulder, with the police officer taking his details.

Dan Hayes, who filmed the hilarious moment and shared it to Facebook, wrote: “Never a better sight this morning, watching some Mercedes driving down the hard shoulder on the M40 to beat the queue, then watching the car in front of me light up like a Christmas tree.

“Yep, an unmarked cop car wiped the 'SMerc' off his face.”

Drivers found inappropriately using the hard shoulder can be slapped with a fine of up to £100, and handed three penalty points.

The act is an offence under motorway traffic regulations.
