A DRIVER and passenger have died, with another 17 injured, after a double decker bus and lorry crashed on the A47.
Bus driver Michael Elcombe, 45, and passenger Brian Chapman, 76, were killed in the horrific crash yesterday near Wisbech in Cambridgeshire yesterday morning.
Police confirmed today that 17 people had been injured in the collision, with six seriously hurt.
Authorities are now investigating just what caused the fatal crash.
A Cambridgeshire Police spokesperson said: "The circumstances of the collision are being investigated, but no arrests have been made."
Locals were left reeling from the horrific crash, with Louise Mead telling the Cambridge Evening News: "We are directly opposite where the crash took place and at about 7.30am this morning we heard an enormous bang."
Steve Barclay, the Conservative MP for the area tweeted out his support for those involved, saying: "Concerning news locally of road fatalities and injuries at Thorney Toll.
"If any constituents are affected and need support in the coming days please get in touch via my constituency office."
At least three ambulance crews, firefighters and two police cars raced to the scene between Guyhirn and Thorney Toll.
The crash was initially declared as a major incident due to the high number of patients, but the alert was stood down.
Drivers were warned to avoid the area as queues built and the road was expected to be shut for three hours in both directions.
At the time of the crash, Cambridgeshire Police tweeted: "We are appealing for witnesses following a collision on the A47 at 7.30am this morning.
"Officers remain at the scene and the road is closed with diversions in place.
"Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call 101.
"Motorists are advised to avoid the area or expect delays."
An East of England Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed seven ambulance crews, three ambulance officers and two rapid response vehicles were sent to the crash site.
A Magpas spokesman added: "Our enhanced doctor and paramedic team were called to a major incident on the A47 in the Wisbech area, involving an HGV and a bus.
"Approximately 15 people have been injured. All emergency services are on the scene."
