Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The Fiat 4x4 was a fantastic addition to the Panda range - offering off-road capabilities with simplistic and affordable running costs.

Competing against the Citroen 2CV and the Renault 4, in 1980 Fiat launched the no-frills utility vehicle designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, who is reported to have once said, “the Panda is like a pair of jeans, that simple, practical, no-frills piece of clothing. I tried to bring into this car the spirit of military machinery, especially helicopters, that means light, rational, built-for-purpose”. How right could he be? With great success, the Panda received an upgrade in 1983, which would make it the first small transverse-engined production car with a four-wheel-drive system. This was further improved in 1986 with an improved and increased capacity engine to 999cc. There were also improvements to the interior and strengthening of the body, which was now fully galvanised.

This is a fine example which had been mothballed since 2007, preserving its condition. Already being a good solid car, Simon and his friend have restored the Panda with a complete engine rebuild, completely stripped the underside and repainted the entire bodyshell before refitting the relevant re-powder-coated components to create a Fiat Panda 4x4 almost as good as new!

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Simon the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Purchased with a friend, we planned to participate in a charity rally, but this car was too good to mess about with.

Simon is the owner of this splendid Fiat Panda. He and his friend are the ones responsible for saving this 80s 4x4. Originally the idea was to find a suitable Panda to tackle the Pandaraid Rally (Madrid to Morocco). With a car found, which had been in storage for several years, they thought this would be perfect. However, when they set to work on the car, they realised just how good it was and that it would be a shame to start fitting roll cages and harnesses. So instead, they decided to restore it to the original condition it once was, which, as you will see, has been executed perfectly.

Now that they've finished recommissioning this car, which had been in longterm storage since ~2007, it's ready for a new owner to either enjoy or add to a collection. Please feel free to ask Simon any questions about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

A solid base which didn't require any welding, the exterior presentation of this Panda 4x4 is hard to beat.

Wheels and Tyres

All of the Panda’s wheels including the spare have been shot blasted and finished with a fresh powder coating of "Satin Black" and then fitted with a matching new set of Toyo tyres.
All are in excellent condition, excuse a bit of mud picked up from a quick ride in the car as intended. Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the Panda is in excellent condition, both on the surface and the underside. As mentioned by Simon "The car had clearly been in dry storage for several years as it was absolutely solid and didn’t need any welding". The door shuts align equally and open and close as they should. Being the S/R (Sunroof) model, the car is fitted with two factory sunroofs that operate correctly. Across the body, we only spotted a couple of small dents on the bonnet surface, as visible in the media.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

With a full respray carried out, the car presents really well. This has really given the car a new lease of life, and areas such as the engine bay and boot look great as well. The finish and colour across all the panels is even, it looked great on the sunny day we documented the car.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows are all in good condition with no apparent scratches to be seen. The window seals and trim are in excellent condition, as are the two vinyl sunroofs. All of the lights are in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks in the lenses.

Plastic bumpers usually show signs of some scuffs collected over the years, but we are pleased to say these, along with the door mouldings, are in excellent condition, nice to see the use of detailing products to make this car look fresh and show off the condition.

Interior

At 36 years old, finding an interior was quite a challenge, but we managed to find one in excellent condition.

Seats and Carpets

The seats in the Panda have been replaced with some from a similar age vehicle and, for their age, are in amazing condition. There are some very, very small signs of wear, as you would expect for the mileage and age. The same can be said for the door cards; they are generally extremely good, but there are a couple of small holes on the driver's side likely from previous fitment etc.

The carpets are excellent, having been replaced. Unfortunately, Simon says that the only new carpet he could find was from a left-hand drive Panda, meaning it has a heel pad on the nearside. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

Finished in matching material to the seats, the dashboard is in excellent condition with no apparent signs of any damage. The instrument cluster is also free from any damage, and the instruments are reported to be working correctly, with the odometer showing a reading of ~62,407 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with the original four-spoke Fiat steering wheel, this is in good condition with no signs of excessive wear.

The gear knob clearly shows numbers 1-5 and reverse with very little wear, and the gaiter is free from splits or tears. Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

The 999c engine may not make the Fiat Panda the quickest of vehicles - but who needs speed when you have four-wheel-drive?

Engine and Gearbox

This is one place a lot of restoration work has been carried out. There has been a full engine rebuild with new piston rings, bores honed, new oil pump, main bearings, big ends, water pump, radiator, temperature sensor, timing belt, spark plugs and engine mounts. Basically, the engine has had everything it’s needed with no expense spared.

The transmission has been given the once over and is all working as it should, with no untoward noises coming from the differentials or gearbox. The car engages into four-wheel drive mode correctly with no issues.

Suspension and Brakes

New shock absorbers have been fitted to ensure a smooth ride over whatever terrain you throw at the Panda. New tie bar bushes, bottom control arms, and track rod ends have been fitted, and all of the suspension components have repainted Satin Black. As a result, the underside presents exceptionally well, as seen in our "Mechanical" gallery.

New calipers, discs, shoes and cylinders have been fitted along with handbrake cables and wheel bearings. The car is reported to come to a halt in a straight line and stop as it should.

The Drive

What a great fun car to drive! You get the retro simplicity of an 80’s vehicle with the added bonus of the car being four-wheel drive, and perfect for the summer months are not one, but two factory-fitted sunroofs!

Electrics and Other

Minimal is simple and that's what you get with the Fiat Panda 4x4. The switchgear is all in good condition and reported to be working correctly, including the clock. There is some wiring for a radio; this is included but has not been fitted or tested.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

With its previous MOT carried out in 2007 and the car in long term storage since, the Panda has now been recommissioned and is ready for on or off-road action, mechanically overhauled, this solid car presents in excellent condition.

As you can see, this 1986 Fiat Panda 4x4 has been restored to restore it to its former glory. Simon does have an extensive number of photographs taken during the work carried out, where you can see just how much work has gone into the Italian classic.

The original handbook is present, and the V5 which shows just three previous keepers. Unfortunately, there is very little in the way of history. Still, when you see the condition, that doesn’t really come into it as everything has been rebuilt or replaced, with particular attention carried out to the underside, which is outstanding.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
